Sluggish below 2000 Revs - Fixed with emergency EGR Blanking

Hi all,

Noticed yesterday that the car was terribly sluggish below 2000 revs, even had to change from 6th to 4th to get up a little hill on the motorway when dropped from 70 to 55 Shocked

Quick ring to Super Mechanic Woody32 and we suspected EGR valves finally gone (Been having the light on for ages), he advised not to drive it and would try an pop round today.

I decided to have a look at it myself today and 1st checked the MAP sensor:

That was cleaned, then took it for a test drive but same issues Big Cry

So the only option I thought was the emergency 2p blanking option Shocked

Below are a few picks of what I did, this also included several 'Talk through' calls with Woody32, so would not have been able to do it without his phone support Thumbs Up

Took the EGR pipes off first, from both ends, then used a tiny bit of super glue to hold the 2p coin in place, only so that it was not going to fall off when positioning it:

Looking in at the front of the car, the left hand side EGR pipe was straight forward, but the right was Censored , but eventually managed to get it off. Saved and re-used both gaskets as well Thumbs Up

Next had to pull the intake off, so I could get to the butterfly - there is a bold and clip, here's how you get the clip off:

Now looking in, you can see the butterfly here

Now had to take the actuator off (I think that's what it's called) and pull out the actuator arm - Make sure that you have your hand inside holding the butterfly

Then it was a case of removing the tray underneath the car to get to all the tools, bolts and screws that I dropped in the process of doing the above Whistle

And then putting it all back together.

Just taken it for a test drive and so far all working well and I have full power back in the car Thumbs Up

Ordering a proper blanking kit now from the 'bay' as I need it ASAP as off to Cardiff Sunday and a few days in London on Monday

Finally, a HUGE BIG THANKS to WOODY32 - what a guy Bow down Bow down Bow down

I have exact same issue at present and also a 2008 D3 - how did you do this without emulator software on a 2008 D3 ?

No emulator software, so I will get the EML come on, I am hoping to do the emulator hopefully when Geoff is down my neck of the woods, until then I've just done this HW fix and will live with the EML Thumbs Up

I do have an IID tool as well, so can remove the EML, but it always comes back on after a few starts

Hope this helps, based on the performance difference in driving it today, it's well worth living with the EML, but of course the 2p is only until the blanking kit arrives Thumbs Up

You need Geoff to install the emulators and a new engine map as well, so why not get a performance map at the same time. Thumbs Up

Quick update on everything.....Have now ordered the blanking kit off eBay for around £15 - not swapping anything over yet though as the 2p's seem to be working perfectly.

Performance = Fantastic, like a new car, they must have been getting gradually worse and worse until I began to see the big 'lag' issues, but the difference now is huge Thumbs Up

MPG = I'd heard that mpg improves with blanking, so decided to do a test. Was in Swansea on Saturday, so filled up and then drove the 87 miles home. Setting cruise control at 60mph on the motorway. Got home and this is what the trip comp read:
Shocked

Now, you'll need to take 3 or 4 mpg off that to account for the Censored trip computer, but I'd have to say that's pretty impressive and by far the best MPG I've ever had. I do tend to cruise at 60 on the motorway, but never got more than 35mpg on such a trip Thumbs Up

EML = The light does come on, but once fault is cleared I sometimes get 4 'drives' with it it off, before it comes back on. I'm happy to live like this while I wait to do the emulators

Conclusion = GET YOUR EGR's BLANKED!!!!!

I'd say this even if you have a 2007+ engine, what you gain is worth having the EML come on, but of course best to plan to get the emulators done as well

Cheers
Iggy

Nice post Igg.

I was intrigued by the bit where you removed the actuator to get the butterfly out of the air intake. Pretty much all the other EGR removal posts mention levering the spindle out of the housing and taking care not to crack the housing. Your way looks fuss free and a darn site simpler!
Was it? I presume there's nothing different about your motor, just the way you went about it....

I blanked my EGRs at the weekend and removed the butterfly flap - it's totally transformed the performance of the Land Rover Very Happy

The actuator rod didnt want to move and when leavering it with a screwdriver I was worried about breaking the brittle plastic throttle body, so I removed it and used a heat gun on the flap for approx 30-60 secs, the actuator rod then slid out of the flap quite easily Thumbs Up

Finally I had the time to do the EGR blanking.
It's not a 20 minutes job, but, didn't drop anything under the engine and of course lots of hand injuries. Too big hands I suppose. Smile
Taked to a short trip and surprise the car is more responsive . If this is the only improvement it's worth it. Will see the mpg later.
PS: I was surprised how much steeky black staff was returned to the engine. Bad very bad!
