Small PC - Anyone using one of these?

Saw these in that last mag that cpc sent out, just wondering if anyone is using one or heard of them?

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/bespoke/bespoke...2162lp.jsp

I guess I was wondering if it was OK for an incar unit, browsing the web at Ronny M's and playing DivX through etc.
Don't worry..... it only seems Kinky the first time you do it!

Not just DG....I too get excited everytime I see one of your posts and start looking over my shoulder before clicking the link Laughing Laughing

Anyway.....I've had a CarPC installed since last October and I can honestly say that it's transformed the D3....or should I say 'living on board' the D3.

I should say that I retro-fitted a 7" Xenarc touchscreen into an old RRS screen so that it looks completely standard (apart from the low-line radio). The PC (a VIA EX15000 mini-ITX) is slotted under the passenger seat and works automatically from the ignition key (hibernating when you take the key out). Start-up and shut-down takes around 6 or 7 seconds each time.

I have access to a great Sat-Nav system (Sygic Drive) and two types of off-road navigation (OziExplorer and CompeGPS) that give me access to moving maps (a la Ordenance Survey) at various scales/resolutions.

I also have a $hitload of mp3s (15GB) instantly available and around 50+ films and childrens shows (Balamory being the main candidate). The audio is fed into the AUX input of my (now-retired) iPod kit and the video is also relayed to two 9" roof-mounted TFT screens in the 2nd row. The quality of the audio is great and the video to the rear screens is more than good enough to keep my little terror amused on longer trips.

As far as the iPod goes I can either plug it into the existing ACM kit for normal listening or just plug it into the USB cable in the glovebox and play/control the iPod via the touchscreen.

The system is powered by Centrafuse and it works fantastically well - you hardly ever need to go to the Windows XP desktop behind it.

I also have Microcat and a selection of GTR documents stored in the PC just in case I get stuck. When out and about I can record video from a webcam directly to the PC and also connect my digital camera up to the reader in the glovebox to copy the photos and swap maps/tracks with other people.

I'll shortly be adding Digital/Analogue TV when I can be bothered to buy a decent USB tuner and will therefore also have digital and analogue radio controlled by the PC too.

Whilst my personal phone is connected to my Parrot hands-free, my work phone is also connected via Centrafuse to the PC so I effectively have two separate hands-free systems running at the same time.

It gives me plenty of options and toys that I wouldn't have and the whole system has cost me around 700 pounds in total - how much would a similar system cost if fitted by LR and how much of what mine can do would the LR system do?

One of these days I'll get around to posting about how I installed the screen and giving more details, but I think the system adds a lot to my D3....not just in off-road navegation but also in entertainment for both me and the little one.

I have to admit that setting up the system and installing it is a bit of geek thing, but I enjoyed it Very Happy

Any more questions?

paul that sounds like an amazing upgrade for minimal financial outlay. Can you post how you did it and where you sourced your hardware.
Tks Terry
