Small stop/start battery - replace or charge?

Car went in for its MOT and final 5 year service on the service plan... Big Cry (£800 for the 6th year and £1589 for the big 7 year one quoted - or £2,239 for a 2 year service plan - either way.... expensive - no surprise). Had hoped to chop it in for a Defender PHEV before the 7 year jobby - but all that looks unlikely now.

Passed MOT with advisories for cracked tyre sidewalls - car has only done 25.700 miles - so no surprise on that either - original tyres bar one. I digress...

Went in with no stop start working (hasn't worked for many many months) - but last few weeks yellow warning - 'no eco-stop start'.

They checked it and put small battery on charge for a few hours - drove out of garage - eco warning light still on FFS! - a few minutes later light went out - great I thought! 20 minutes later back on again.

Dealer suggested, before I left, to put it on a trickle charge overnight - that may work because the little battery seems as though it should hold a charge they said.

So now I'm wondering the best way forward? - buy a CTEK battery charge and give it a go - or just bite the bullet and put in a new one? (or would this not resolve the issue - as only mainly do shortish journeys - which I know doesn't help - but at least it may get rid of the yellow warning.

Can't find batteries at all on Advance Factors website - or maybe I'm doing something wrong (likely)

I'm looking for the collective to give me some insight please....

By the way - had a Disco 5 for the day, nice car like drive - a bit firm - but felt like I sat into it rather than sat on it like the D4 - nice solid road holding drive ... impressed - and couldn't see the ugly rear end - until I got out ... argh! - didn't know if it was a 2ltr or 3ltr though...

Replacement battery is an Exide EK151.

Mine failed after 4 years with the same symptoms as yours. Thumbs Up

Thx BBDisco3... has it worked since without replacing the main battery and did it need any 'tool' to tell the ECU what you had done? - straight swap I'm hoping!

It's was 12 months ago - I think the light stayed on for a few minutes after the battery was changed (straight swop) but then stayed off and the stop/start worked again for several months.

It might not be the battery. There was a software glitch that threw up the no eco stop/start message and inaction. I had LRA download the fix.

I did subsequently need a new battery just before it was out of its 3 year warranty though.

“ but felt like I sat into it rather than sat on it like the D4” - That’s one of several things I dislike about the D5.

A raked windscreen, I can’t see the corners and it has a small glass area. It just feels like driving an estate car, albeit a high up one. Which of course is probably exactly what LR intended it to feel like.

I had exactly that on my D4 and also when I picked up RRS, light eventually went out after a longish run but still didn’t work. The small stop star5 battery was changed and all worked after a short run on both cars. The RRS LR manual says you need to calibrate for main battery, but doesn’t say for small one. If it’s four or five years old then it is probably near the end of life even if it’s not the problem

Does one need the Stop/Start battery to "work" for the MoT ?

If not I'd ignore the issue.

If you do I would put it on 24 hour charge before the next MoT.

Why ignore it?

Because I find stop/start a pain in the Censored

I totally accept that others may like it.

The replacement start /stop EXIDE battery can be bought for around £40. The eco light is a strong indication that it is that battery that is a problem. In the thread on this subject there are mentions of prices and suppliers.
As DM has alluded to, a BMS reset is required after replacement (DM put me right on this recently), however many people don’t. I just replaced mine with no reset on the advice from some on this forum and my stop/start started working and eco light went off straight away. Obviously not the correct procedure though. Mine packed up at 3 1/2 years.
If you have an IID you can do the BMS reset yourself. Not sure if a borrowed IID can do it (don’t have one myself).
Good luck
Cheers

Should have said, if you buy the Landrover branded EXIDE battery it’s £150 so we’ll worth buying the unbranded.

Being a suspicious sort, I suspect Landrover change the start/stop software at 3 years service so it doesn't work so much to maybe save the starter, battery etc. Mine hasn't worked since about year 3 - 4. As much as I like the idea, I think starter may take a hammering when in a lot of traffic.
I do 260 mile trips to Cornwall every 3 weeks so plenty of charging but it never works. Even after a charger for 2 days.
