In the handbook for my 2005 model, Land Rover are adamant that you should never fit snow chains to the rear wheels.

Very old thread but still relevant when you're researching the subject. 2 things ....
a) I can't believe all the different statements above..what's going on...my D3 manual (2005 TDV6 SE with standard 260/55x18 & 'std' M&S tyres) says chains on rear wheels only!!!
b) most socks on market are now homologated for the 'B26 panel' (euro roadsign stating chains obligatory during snowfall) which means for that once yearly (potential) requirement, even our big tyres can be shod for a measly £50/56 euros. (Polaire and ISSE at this price). Socks are easy to put on, wash and store in the car 'in case', so should make the 'must I buy chains' discussion redundant
What's also good is that they're more compact and less damaging if they touch suspension or brake parts, and cheap enough, so you CAN have your cake and eat it by having a pair for each axle. The reduced effectiveness compared to traditional chains - esp on ice - is compensated for by the LR's 4WD+All terrain programme's capability. I'm talking occasional requirement here, not regular/serious snow work.

Update - having paid €50 for socks (ISSE Regulars) I saw CHAINS to fit our wheels in Leclerc at Albertville for.....€50!! Blimey. Probably cheap chinese trash but might get you out of trouble once and we only ever use them once every few years D2 Td5 (most unreliable car of 21 I've owned but still a dear old thing)
D3 TDV6 (most reliable car - er, till this winter)

Hi, has anyone fitted snow chains to 20" wheels. I know LR says not to in the hand book BUT its a 'guide' book not a law book.
I tried mine on the rears and there seems plenty of room. Not so on the front with little clearance to the upper suspension arm. So just wondering if anyone has any real life experiance.
Thanks[/i] Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂
