I would say that if it hasn’t been opened, then no problem.

Unopened and stored in a nice, cool place it’ll be fine. I don’t know if there is an official recommendation but I’ve heard the number 5 years sometimes being mentioned.

I’ve got a 5ltr unopened plastic container of Castrol D3 engine oil, must now be about 15 years.

Happy to pass on for free collection to a local D3 owner if it’s still usable. Confused

It’ll probably still be ok for a Chinese tractor that will accept anything from sunflower oil upward… but yeah Laughing

Engine oil is only within spec for a specific time, typically 5 to 7 years. Most oils are a blend and few blends are 100% stable so will separate eventually. The agitation of a running machine will stop that but then it brings in other aspects of deterioration.

LR advocate oil changes every year but other manufacturers opt for longer times. As oils have to comply with specifications if a change is recommended after 2 years in practice the life is probably 3 years in an engine.

I have always been a bit dubious about the recommended life of the hydraulic oil in brakes but not complying with manufacturer advice is risky.

Good to know. Thumbs Up

But reckon that means its value has dipped as low as can go and it’s now about to pass through its maturation phase.

So I’ll just keep it for a few more years and then it’ll be worth a fortune. Wink
