Sounds more like misfuelling. If he's just filled up, get him to check what the receipt says .

He assures me the receipt says diesel

Thanks for the quick responses last night.
He was collected by Green Flag, the car sent to a local indy and he went home, picked up his new FFRR and set off again!
No idea why he didnt go in that in the first place-MY18 and very nice indeed.

Just got it back today and it was some wires in the fuel tank that had chaffed or worn out.
Tank out and repaired along with fuel gauge sender (or sensor?).
His fuel gauge had been reading empty for a while too.
