Noticed these one on each side. Is there something missing? Like a pipe?

They are for when the engine is fitted in a car, swirl flap widgets.

swirl flap widgets - could you explain a bit more? What are they/what purpose they serve?

They close off one inlet valve / tract per cylinder.

Must result in more torque at low rpm
Or smoother drive in a light car

Lots of makes/models of engines have them, lots of them fail and the engine eats them with pretty bad results!
There is a whole market of swirl flap blocking/removal kits out there.

Been around a long time now, can remember our year 2000/2001 mercs having them.

on a JAG TDV6 they are connected.... as said here above .. not on a LR version Best regards
