Soot in exhaust and black smoke... help!

Have just arrived in Spain after driving from the UK and after the last fuel up (Esso diesel) we started noticing black smoke when we accelerated and the revs hit about 2200+

I have had no bings/bongs, reduced power or limp home mode activated... it just chucks out black smoke under acceleration and the exhaust is full of thick black soot... any ideas?

I know I had the turbo problem recently but that seems to have been fixed with the innotech soloution I used and the turbo is still kicking in as far as I can tell.

Any ideas welcome as I want to avoid a relay home!

Hi, I was thinking naff fuel but it was the most expensive Esso had on offer as I have been running on Shell VPower since my last brush with turbo faults!

I am hoping it will clear when I top the tank up tomorrow... if not it will be a long push back to the UK for the misses Laughing

Sounds like a Censored intercooler hose as per Disco_Mikey, but I still wouldn't rule out the turbo after your recent troubles.

Where are you in Spain? If you're in the North East then you should have a nice sunny day tomorrow (sorry DSL) Thumbs Up

Well what do you know - I took the intercooler hose off today, just the usual eye full of oil and not a lot else really, no splits or holes etc.

So I took a drive over the border into Andorra and filled up the tank with BP fuel and booted it back to the mountains on the Spanish side of the border.

The vehicle has stopped chucking out thick clouds of black smoke and runs a lot smoother with the turbo kicking in as it should.

Fingers crossed it was just a bad batch of fuel from the Esso station in France (this only started happening after the last complete tank fill up from an Esso station on the peage).

My Faultmate FCR still showed an intermittent turbo under boost fault and the cruise control packed up until I cleared the fault... but the vehicle has not binged/bonged/gone into limp home mode or anything else... so fingers crossed it will be OK until I get back to the UK and strip that turbo down once and for all!

If anything exciting happens I will update here so you can all have a laugh at my expense!
