Hi, after years of fighting to wind the spare wheel down, the cable reel has now given up the ghost. It'll only lift the wheel a few inches off the ground. It looks like it was never wound on right in the first place. Anybody got a idea of the price of a new one? At least it sailed through the mot.

It's quite a common problem... A new winch costs about 40 from memory and if you contact Nick, forum name 'The Large One' he will give you the correct details.
It is very easy to jam... if an electric gun is used to wind up the wheel, or if the spare is removed and the winch wound up empty, in this case you have to get someone to pull as you wind up to put the winch under some pressure.
It's very easy to replace, only about half a dozen bolts. As you slide down the banister of life

So what would be the right procedure?
Winch down....take out spare......leave un-winched.....put other wheel in place....winch back up...?
Correct?
I have never done this before and I want to change my spare (the small standard one) with the same wheel & tire I run at this moment.

Yes... But... I had to put the spare on the car and leave the damaged tyre with the garage for a repair for a couple of hours, so wound up the winch empty... never worked properly after that. I then learnt that the trick is to always wind it up under pressure. As you slide down the banister of life

hang one of the smaller tyre fitters on the cable as you wind it up - seems to work OK.

I'm just wondering, wouldn't it be easier if it was just hung on the back. Swing away carrier is a poss if I can convince the wife it's cheaper than the factory idea. She would at least know where it is when the AA patrol turns up to change the wheel

Having had a rear wheel carrier I would say not.
Also £40 for a new winch. £600 min for carrier plus full size wheel and tyre. Welcome "Lola"

I've just got the same problem - wound the cable up without the spare while it was being checked for a puncture, and now it's knackered, won't wind up or down so I can't carry a spare until it's fixed. Why on earth isn't there a warning in the handbook? My car is still under warranty so I'm expecting the replacement to be covered....£78 plus fitting is what I'm told by the dealer.

I paid about 40 quid from Yeovil LR and replaced it myself... only about half a dozen bolts, didn't take long to do. As you slide down the banister of life
