How can the cable be tight if there was a wheel and now there is not ?
Only way to lower the cable and re-tighten is with the 3rd row seats up and the tailgate open.
Did you leave the D3 unlocked and out of sight for a while ?
When you had your slow puncture in June... did you or maybe the dealer change the wheel ?? If the dealer during a service, did they forget to put the wheel back ??

Car definately not left alone, etc. besides, I have so much c*** in the boot as well as the rubber mat it is a nightmare to even get to lifting the seats up. Perhaps I have misunderstood how the wheel should be locked in place when present. Has anyone got any photos of this? Will go out and take a photo of the empty space later11 HSE Santorini Black

Just looked properly, winch cable cut through cleanly leaving about an inch sticking out of the mechanism11 HSE Santorini Black
Andy at Trinity Land Rover will do you a good deal on a spare / replacement of mechanism, they have had to do a few round here, and towbars too "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

I was in equicar in the west midlands today and he has a stack of wheels off breakers. might be worth a shout monday morning. Simon is the lad who owns it
Mailed him the other day and asked if he may have any roof rail, he said no, which considering the shells he has I thought strange, you didn't happen to see any whilst the there did you.

didn't see any - none that were usable anyway. Most of the chasis/ bodies are pretty banged.
The favour the bolt cropper method, (thats gentlemen of the road to my local constabulary] I was also told at the time that if I adjusted his nuts with a pickaxe handle whilst he was underneath the D3, then I could be arrested for assault!!! Next time I might try gas axing his legs instead, would this leave a carbon footprint I wonder??

From looking at mine, you can only get at the cable if its visible through the spokes, so on some wheels (e.g. SE 10spokes) I wouldnt have thought you could get cutters through as there's little space between the spokes, but on Type1 (S spec 18") and 19" HSE rims the gap is much bigger. I always make sure one of the wheel spokes is directly in line with the cable (so you cant see it) before tightening up the cable. Not sure if this fully protects the wheel from disappering, but may help.

cut a circle out off a piece of ally checker plate, pop a hole in center, plus a slot to fit over wire and bobs your uncle, can't get croppers anywhere.

Whilst fixing the retention mechanism on the underslung spare wheel of my Fiat MPV, I spent 10mins dismantling the unit, taking out the wire and slipping a 4" long piece of 3/4" steel pipe on the cable just above the end which meets the spare wheel/plate.
Fitted the unit back on the car, attached the wheel and cranked it all into place.
Quick peek underneath confirmed that the cable is now wirecutter/ proof in it's new armour jacket.
I can't understand why the manufacturers don't do this. Maybe I should go on Dragon's Den????I let my mind wander.......and it didn't come back.
