Definitely looks like the plastic protector is catching on the hitch and nothing to do with the nut. Even with a RLD plate, if the winch cable is reachable on the top of the wheel then it will be gone in less than 10 seconds.

yes its definitely the plastic plate stoping the wheel moving further up in to the wheel well.

You make a good point about someone being able to get their arm round the top to snip the wire. I shall head outside in a sec to check that.

I hadn't wanted to trip the plastic protector just for aesthetic reasons but obviously I may need to.
