Definitely looks like the plastic protector is catching on the hitch and nothing to do with the nut. Even with a RLD plate, if the winch cable is reachable on the top of the wheel then it will be gone in less than 10 seconds. MY16 Landmark - Yulong White

yes its definitely the plastic plate stoping the wheel moving further up in to the wheel well.
You make a good point about someone being able to get their arm round the top to snip the wire. I shall head outside in a sec to check that.
I hadn't wanted to trip the plastic protector just for aesthetic reasons but obviously I may need to.
