Do split charge systems cause D3 computer faults? |
|
I have a theory...
I have a dual battery system with automated split charge control.
When the electrical systems are at full stretch (6 aux lights, heated seats, heated screens, etc) and the vehicle has just been started there is a risk that switching in an aux battery causes a power brown-out to the electronic systems resulting in spurious faults - amoung the most common being trnasmission failure, suspension failure, HDC unavailable and all topped off with a sprinkling of EPB failure.
I have noticed this several times now and have finally correlated the appearance of such faults with the timed cut-in of the split charge.
Anyone else have similar experiences?

Never had this issue with mine, but only running 3xdvd, 1xCB, fridge and Entel Charger is the highest load I've had on mine. But it is one of the Traxide ones Bodsys Brake Bible

How flat is your aux battery when this happens (or does it do it continously) . I run 4 Aux batteries and have no issues at all . Possibly the battery or the split charger is faulty and drawing very high amps . Or the alternator is suspect

Hi Iona, there are known problems like what you are experiencing, caused by some types of split charge systems, but have you tried disconnecting your split system to see if the problems still occur. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

Neither battery has been particularly flat during problems.
I just wonder if there is an inrush current when charging batteries in the same way you might get from a coil on a transformer or bulb. Don't know enough about the business of battery charging myself.
I ran the car for some time with do dual battery system at all and there was no problem.
I have also had a proble with the alternator belt and that has now been changed - it was slipping in water and had what was described to me as a slit in it.
