Little touches to my new D3

Hi all,

Had my D3 for three weeks now and loving it. It’s supposed to be the family bus for school runs and me to play in at weekends but didn’t think I’d take to it as much as i have. I love the thing, it’s great! I’ve started tweaking one or two bits and have a few things lined up but today I sprayed the sump guard in plastikote as the bare metal looked too clumsy to me (photos below). Really pleased with how it turned out.

Also, what is the point in these side tubes (is there a proper name for them). They’re not steps and I’m sure they’re not rock sliders so what are they? Can’t decide if i like them!

Cheers

Paul

Good looking car.
The side tubes do offer some side protection but not as much as rock and tree sliders.
They are secured to a bracket that then fixes to the sill.
I took mine off the D3 last week and the brackets were rotten to the point that one just turned as it had rusted right through.
Luckily the sills are still in good condition.
I put on some Shire Fabrications rock and tree sliders and was very impressed with quality.
I have Prospeed on the D4 which are good but expensive.
The rock and tree sliders cover the whole sill and are much more structural.
Hope you enjoy the car.

Looks good, I’m thinking about a set of LR side steps as the boss lady (who is vertically challenged) has trouble getting into the car, maybe something to do with me accidentally raising it up to full height, obviously by mistake of course! Mr. Green

Baz,
on the pic you can see the paintjob around the corners is already shot. Rust is bubbling up from under the paint. You need to address that now, or be very sorry soon.

My action plan was the same: fit rocksliders. Took the plastic off. Not the sight i liked to see.

1. Buy a cheap usb boroscope. (I paid 17 Euro)

2. Look inside. Oh horror.

3. Couple of hundred Euros later: Sills repainted from the outside, flooded with anti corrosion oil (ACF 50) from inside.

I do reaaly hope i did stabilise the rust. Getting rid is not possible, but at least ensuring it doesn't progress anymore.

Important: look under the car, above the sill. Might look really bad there. Top spot for dirt to gather and do its evil.

Yes it is just starting to show signs around the holes.
The sill was cleaned inside and out and treated with cavity wax.
It’s not too bad for a 12 year old car that has done 272k.
It is all solid and the wax should slow it down.
The chassis has some surface rust as well but nothing serious.
If I can get another 12 years I’ll be happy Laughing

Same thinking about the 12 years.

i don't like wax, though, as it gets cracks when it gets older. Grease and oil - Fluid Film, Mike Sanders or that ACF stuff it is for me.

Some of our friends in solihull back in the days decided to do not give a Censored and put all the wax allotted to my particular chassis into one spot instead of distributing it evenly in the sill. Ner Ner
