Slow Puncture Mystery

Hi all

My Passenger side front has a strange issue where it is leaking a few PSI over a period of weeks.

Initially flagged up on TPMS around a month ago, went away and now back although as time goes on its clear it is loosing more air in the same time.

The tyre has been checked and is clear of any issue. Is it possible on these that the bead has gone? LRA tech says it isn't too common for the valve to go.

How much should one be expecting to pay for a bead seal?

Cheers

Jack

Sometimes the wheel itself can have a leak, which with colder weather could make sense as metal will contract. Could be result of hitting pot hole etc.

Most times I have had this issue is when off roading and mud eventually gets between sidewall and rim which breaks seal, which was always sorted by removing and cleaning wheel and tyre before re fitting.

Can only think take wheel off and find tub with water to put in

I had similar symptoms and needed a new alloy. Not sure if they can be repaired with any great success but I decided a new one was the way ahead for me. Good luck.

Wife has a habit of finding every pot hole in the modern world Whistle
only drives her own car!
Her front nearside wheel had a slow puncture for a while and when I took it off and put soapy water round the rim on the inside between the wheel and the tyre had a stream of soapy bubbles.
Gave it to a local wheel fixer, who gently heated it and 'trued' it up, no more problems, he even balanced the wheel before returning it

Cheers guys, took it down to tyre place today and had it in the tank, not much air loss except a slight amount round rim. They have taken it off and cleaned it up, then bead sealed it. Illl see how it goes.

If it continues I’ll swap the tpms from this to the spare and use the spare and sling this underneath for emergencies.

Thanks

Hopefully that’s fixed it.
I was losing 1psi a week due to a leaking TPMS valve stem. I reckon it got damaged off road. You can replace just the stem btw.

Maybe only me thinking, BUT isn't that a stupid idea?
When you get a puncture and go for the spare that's slowly deflating you'll be stuck with 2 flat tyres then

I was thinking that ANY detectable air loss from the rim is an issue.

cleaning and resealing is often sufficient though but you should keep an eye on the tyre whether it's the spare or not. in fact, probably easier to keep it in use and check it.

But as the spare it may hold air as there's no weight on it, so not completely daft idea.

Yep, my thought was as al said, it won’t be bearing weight and I carry a pump so can top it up should it be needed.

As it happens, looking at it today I see they’ve also repaired it in one area which they didn’t mention, although receipt says bead seal and repair. I had a big stone stuck in it and while i didn’t think it went right through and never did lra, it’s possible it was leaking ever so slightly I guess.

I’m going to stick it back on the front and see what happens. I think it will be just fine now I’ve realised it was repaired and bead sealed.

It’s not my everyday yet as have a work van although changing jobs soon, so I can monitor it while it’s parked up for any air loss without any great risk of getting stuck.

Our Rav4 has constant leaky bead syndrome. It’s taken my friendly tyre fitter 3 goes to get one to stop leaking, and now another one is doing it Big Cry
