Stange fault - any shared experience

Whilst driving I noticed the

a) the revs were not dropping off as they should
and
b) the temperature gauge was registering cold - despite the engine being up to temperature.

I used the age old fix, stopped, turned off and then started up again and all was once again well. Has anybody else had this combination? Such odd events cause me anxiety and bad memories of P38 days!

Laughing

Owning a p38, I know what you mean!

Are the revs actually dropping off but the gauge isn't showing it? Or do you mean the revs on the engine are actually holding?

Happened again today - revs at tick-over at 1k and engine temp showing cold (when normal temp already reached) I stopped, turned off the ignition and counted to 10 then fired up again and all was well.

Thoughts appreciated

Having discussed the issue with my D3 mechanic (he's a star) he thinks that the cause could be a loose connection that is telling the ECU that the engine is cold hence the temp gauge dropping to zero and the revs being raised (cold start). Turning off and re starting re sets the sensor. Sounds convincing to me esp as the problem occurred both times following driving over Yorkshire cobbles!

Or just the actual temp sensor going down?

I am seeing a man with Testbook on Monjday so maybe the origin of the problem will reveal itself. I may try and find some cobbles and prompt the problem again on Monday!
