Start issue (again)

Hoping someone can advise, my LR3 keeps failing to start again,

The last diagnostic issue after a no start was with the internal lamp circuit - turned the internal lights off and that fixed it for a while

It’s got a new battery, cluster pod

No turn over but tonight it ticked too, which makes me think the battery’s flat - but it’s new - so could this mean the alternator is gone?

I know that doesn’t fix the internal light issue but I’m at a loss and feel like chucking a lit flame on it right now

Maybe.
Might be a faulty starter
Maybe a significant battery drain.

Very difficult to tell from here

You could video it and upload to YouTube (phone app) if you know how.
Showing the dash lights and hearing the noise.

May or may not give a few more clues

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the reply,

It also had a new starter motor last year :/

No lights on dash

I do actually have a YT @lr3lass I’ve had to abandon the car at my parents and use theirs, so will try pop tomorrow eve and plug my diagnostic in again and give an update - I feel like it has to be a wire issue with the internal lamp circuit (fault code B1D14-15) and somehow related to the battery - it did the same on Tuesday night after work (drove fine to work) and after a wiggle of the wires next to the battery it started

The interior lights code is very unlikely to cause this.

If the battery cables are loose, Could be the issue

I was interested to see if dash lights dimmed badly when you tried to start. And that sort of thing.
A picture or video paints a thousand words

Ok. Had a look at video.

The oil lights going out when you move key to crank pos.
That means the earth lead to the engine is bad.

Someone on here will know where it is. Or maybe one needs adding.
It’s under the car anyway.

To prove it you could connect your jump lead between battery -
And metal on engine. Remove it if it sparks loads or gets hot!
And then try and start.

I see what you mean about interior lights.

Oh really so will that faulty Earth lead to engine be the root cause of the start issue/dead battery?

Thanks will try that tonight/tomorrow

Certainly one thing (most important) to check for the start issue.

I think a thick cable needs adding in early year cars

Still can’t pin point the issue, checked the earths and they seem OK, voltage is OK

Resorted to buying a NOCO boost pack… has anyone got one? It has good reviews online…

did you find a bit of metal on the engine to attach a jump lead to, while it was giving problems

Check the alternator output while running and if its less than say 13v ish then its dead or dying, if you can run a new earth strap from engine to body and see if that helps.
I get that lamp error often since replacing all the globes with LED's but it doesn't cause any issues.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the suggestions;

The battery V is fine, however since Thursday the car won’t start at all so is now stuck on my drive

No turn over and intermittent ticking from the starter motor - spoken to a few people and they think the starter motor I had replaced last year could be faulty or not fitted right

Ringing the garage this morning to see :/

Will update when I find out!
