Could starter motor bring up other faults

Discovery 3 2005.
Drove for about 30 mins yesterday with no problems. Pulled into a car park and suddenly got loads of faults, lights flickering, car juddering and just about got into a parking spot and stopped engine. Tried restarting it again but all I get is a click and nothing else.
Faults that showed up were parking brake fault, Hdc fault and a big F on the display where it normally shows D. Could have been others but it happened all of a sudden so not sure.
Recovery guy tried his power pack on it but still just one click. Plugged his reader in but said no faults were shown. He reckons it’s probably just starter motor but could that really cause all them faults while I was driving?
Any help appreciated.

Alternator I would think.

DIsconnect battery, charge up and see if it will start.

As you say, a starter is unlikely to cause problems once running

It had a new battery and alternator less than a year ago so I don’t think it’s that. The recovery fella hooked it up to a fully charged power pack but it made no difference

Well its unlikely 2 things failed together ?
I.e starter and whatever you think caused all the lights.

I would disconnect the battery as a failed alternator can knacker them quickly.

Charging the battery will prove or disprove

had this on my d3 no lights or faults not even clicking so replaced the start motor and all fine , have to say its more likely to be alternator issues/battery.

mine is a manual so managed to jump start it to get it home.

If it was battery though surely it would have started from his power pack?

If the battery was really flat they don't always work.

Do you think the battery is charged now ?

Interior lights nice and bright ?

I haven’t disconnected the battery and I don’t have a charger so it’s just sat until I can get it towed to a garage tomorrow. The interior lights seem as bright as normal though, electric windows work fine etc which all make me think it’s something else this time. Hope I’m wrong as that will be an easy fix

My battery light came on about a week ago. I Had it checked out and they told me the battery was ok, and that it was charging.
A new battery was fitted approx. 6 months ago.
Driving home last night after work, and the dash board was like black pool illuminations, HDC - F - suspension fault - seat belts etc etc etc. Radio went off, no hazard lights working
I turned every thing off on the car just to enable me to get home. Lack of power aswell.
Got home, so I left the car on the roadway, turned engine off. Tried to start it again - nothing.
Left it till this morning.
Got the wife's XC90 to jump start the D3.
It eventually started, no faults on the dash board apart from the battery light.
Decided to drive it to the garage (approx. 1 mile away) and left it there.
I have read up on this forum (great forum by the way) and all the info I have found leads to the Alternator fault. You can pick these up at Euro car parts for approx. £220 (denso type)
Be back on the road in no time - hopefully

good luck

What make of alternator did you have fitted?- some none oem don't even last a week!
Other possibilities are brake light bulbs and brake switch.

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The new battery was from Halfords with a 5 year warranty in Jan 17.
The alternator was a genuine denso from lr parts a few weeks later.
I did replace a brake light bulb last year sometime with one I bought from euro car parts but that was probably around the same time so it’s done plenty of miles since.
Would the brake switch prevent it from starting though?

The brake switch is not just a switch it sends a lot of information to the ECU and other modules, when braking for instance it cuts the fuel supply to the engine, as you know you have to press the Brake peddle to start, for what they cost I Would change both switch and brake bulbs, keep the old ones for spares if they are not faulty.
Have you fitted any LED bulbs? -they can also cause mysterious problems.
Check all earth connections are good, try a temporary earth from battery to engine, check connection to starter motor is good, clicking is usually a poor earth connection.

Well it turns out that it was a frayed wire underneath somewhere that fused everything out so not too bad in the end.

Glad you got it fixed. It would be good to know which wire and where it had frayed. In case others suffer the same and come across this thread in the future.

I’ll find out on Tuesday when I pick it up and update on here. I think he said the wire had touched the diff so that might give an idea.
