Steering feels resistance under load and 25mm backlash fixed |
|
See end for how I fixed mine
Hi guys after some advice on what to look at next as I’ve changed a lot that was needed
When sat ready to pull away but only on a slight left turn I can feel resistance like pulling against me when I do pull away and a kind of grinding noise sound. I can make it do it only on certain corners and under acceleration not foot down just pulling away
I’ve change the wheel bearing to a timkin
Steering rack, tie rods and track rod ends all new
New PAS fluid
New lower steering column
Got to the stage now I’ve looked at the suspension arms and they don’t seem the best but can’t see any major fails Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

The pulling could be a tyre not at the correct pressure, the noise maybe the brakes or loose back plate

I had a similar problem with mine, it would be fine then had resistance when turning left, turned out to be the steering universal joint, got that done all it solved the problem.
The more you leave it, it becomes worse as the joint starts to stiffen up, when the old joint was taken off and inspected it was very hard to move.
Hope that helps? General Grabber AT3's

I’m booked in tomorrow for my garage that do the 4 wheel alignment to check it over and see if any of the suspension has worn out
Also I’ve done 300 miles today on motorways, now I’ve only been running around 30/40 mph roads since I’ve changed all the bits and noticed I’ve got a fair bit of play in the steering. It’s been horrible to drive like it’s swaying left then right to try and keep her straight. If I focus on the dashboard and move the steering wheel I’d guess at about 25mm of moment before the steering does anything Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

25mm movement before anything happens is a lot of play, it will be interesting to hear what is the issue.

Garages have done the tracking and it’s driving straight now but still got the slack of about 25mm, so I asked if they found anything and the reply was the guy who done the job had had to go home early so unable to speak with him
He’s back in on Saturday so will call then, anyway I thought I’d take another look getting a friend to wobble the steering wheel within the 25mm flat spot. I checked from the steering wheel right through to the rack and nothing no play at all so I’ve called the place I had the rack from and they state that the rack has no adjustment to take out the backlash so in my eyes the rack is at fault and I’m trying to get them to send a replacement rack for me to swop out will keep this posted to anyone interested Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
