Steering Knock

Since purchasing my new 3SEV8 I have had a l big problem with steering knock. The service department and Land Rover at Trivett in Sydney have been fantastic but have nto solved the problem.

1. The checked the car out and found nothing, I then took the service manager for a drive and showed him the problem.

2. The took it back for another day and tighted things up but to no avail.

3. They replace the whole front end steering and still the problem is there.

Each time I have a loan vehicle and it doesnot have the problem.

Description: When I go over small bumps there isa lound knock through the steerign column. When I break approaching a speed hump it is more prominent. When 4 wheel driving it is like driving an old worn out car.

Other than this the car is a dream. Laughing

Has anyone else noticed this problem. Nik

Do you know this sounds like a problem of something else knocking the steering columb, not the fault of the actual one.

i suffer from this and returned to the dealer to have a lower column assembly replaced yesterday, but it was not available. on investigation it appears that these are now on back order as there is a fault with the original supply and so replacement is deemed pointless untill redesign/new supplier is resolved...another 35 mile round trip!

My vehicle started doing this last Sunday and is progressively getting worse, started doing it when going over bumps and now does it when turning left as well! Its booked in with the dealer on Monday for this as well as a squealing park brake!

Will let you know what they find - or dont find.

Same fault here - goes to the dealer monday but after the chief engineer drove it I don't have much hope as he "didn't" notice it... They'll check anyway... And yes, the dealer's Discovery hasn't got the knock... But they can't tell the difference...

My 2005 SE has had steering knock from new and after several attempts at fix has finally had new 'improved' lower steering column / universal joint fitted. Knock now GONE - hopefully for good! The other problems I have had I can cope with such as spurious warnings of impending but seemingly unreal doom from info centre! Now I can get on with enjoying what is great car Very Happy

I had the same problem. The dealer replaced the steering column, still had the knock. Next was the steering rack, still had the knock but not as bad. Next was the antiroll bar, FIXED
I have done about 15k miles since and no more knocks.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I also have this knock but mostly only noticeable when offroad, think I'll get it checked as well, oooh Yeovil will be pleased to see me was only in last week for seat adjustment and heater update, still I did mention the knock not long after I got the car and they said they could not find anything Rolling Eyes

My dealer found that the problem was the lower stearing rack, they replaced it last week and the knocking sensation has now gone. Very Happy

I had this knock as well my dealer informed me that it was a bracket on the column and that a modified one was ordered to replace mine now not sure how true that all is but whatever they did cured my fault. My point is if it is a modified part then obviously LR know about

Nik - I have a 2005 build HSE TDV6 delivered January 2006, which has the same issue. Really bad offroad and round the farm. It went in for first service this week, and I copied part of this thread to them for review. Came back unfixed, inspection only, and nothing found. Dealer claimed no info on LRA site. Dealer asked for more info, so I've mentioned the lower steering rack and anti roll bar. He's gone off to investigate - I'll keep you posted on progress - Malcolm
Why have I never felt this way about a 4WD before?
