Should I still keep my D4? Next bill is 6000 EUR
Hello chaps, I have a bit of a dilemma here.
I just did the annual service on my D4, just crossed 220k KMs (136k miles) and I was advised I need to do next:
- change wheel bearing front
- change discs and pads front
- change all brake hoses
- change suspension arms at the back
- change all fluids in gearbox, transfer box etc
Now all of this is usual stuff to change but the estimate is very close to 6000 EUR! (5400 GBP)
Now, I don't feel like doing it at an Indy, I don't think the cost is beyond expensive for the age and mileage on the car. But my dilemma is, should I invest these 6000 EUR in the car and continue driving it to the ground for the next 2-3 years? I drive 50-60k km per year.
I am worried I do the 6000 EUR service and soon later on I have an issue with the engine or gearbox...Which will total the car.
I have been super happy with the D4. Got it 3 years ago with 100k km and never missed a beat. Apart from the front suspension arms and a new radiator 1 month ago, it has been running flawless.
What I am dreaming about next is car the Vogue TDV8 the current 2013- model. But they are quite bit more expensive than the D4 to buy. Anybody has driven/owned both?
Anyway, what would you do?

What you were 'advised' to do and what you need to two are very often two different things. Garages are not unknown to raise issues that can perhaps wait.
A couple of things on the list are relatively simple to do yourself if you're interested (brakes are easy; with the discs off the front hub is relatively simple though it can be a to remove without an impact wrench). I'd have no problem letting a decent local garage do the brakes and hub. The rear arms, too, aren't a huge drama and again I'd let a good local fellow do that. Ditto the fluids.
You can get the parts yourself to save a load of money.
I've never had to do brake hoses on these and so can't comment, but it'd be worth you taking a look and seeing if there is wear. Look for bulges in the hoses, or cracks.
Bottom line is that you could cut this bill perhaps in half with a bit of shopping around and getting your own parts. You could cut it further if you're able to do some of the work.
At half the price you've been quoted (which assumes all that work is needed) then it seems a bit unnecessary to write the thing off. Nothing on that list would suggest main stealer to me at all; a good Indie is a good idea but also a good local mechanic could do that work.PAGODA

You'd be almost a quarter of that price
Perhaps the garage doesn't want to do the work?

To give an update, sold the D4 and got a X5
Not because I wanted a X5 but I got a very good deal from a friend.
Nothing compares to the Discovery 4 I'm afraid

I really hope so.
In reality, the D4 was somewhat bulletproof. I owned it for 3 years and racked up 140k kms (86k miles) and I changed only the radiator 2 months ago ( again dealer charged me an arm and a leg) and the front suspension arms.
Yes it was eating pads every service and disks every other service, but hey it is an enormous car.
Almost never electrical gremlins, at least nothing serious that didn't clear with a restart of the car.
After the 200k kms, you could feel that it was starting to be a bit "ratty" but overall the feeling was very solid, you couldn't tell this car had almost quarter million kilometres.
I was getting a bit worried about how the transmission was shaky once you reverse, stop and put it in drive and start immediately, for a second or two there would be some strange shake. It was only happening in that scenario, R, brakes, D and gas.
It was a great car and we enjoyed it. The X5 does feel a bit more solid but we are already missing the Disco. No place high enough in the X5 to put my left arm and it is driving me crazy! Driving the Disco is like cruising a Yacht!
