Stolen - LR Discovery 4 Removeable Tow Bar

Hi all,

Not sure where to post this on here......

Out and about in Lancashire today.
Parked up at two locations:
- Whalley - Co-Op Carpark approx. 16:30-18:00
- Tiggies Italian car park on the A59 approx. 18:30-19:40

The tow bar was in place and locked this morning when we left home this morning.

Phoned in and reported to Lancaster Police - crime number received.

Anyone else had similar in the area recently?

Stay secure.

Many thanks

JC

too late now....its has never been wise to leave them on when not in use...as you have found out..
the other thing would be a spare wheel protector as they nick those as well and phook up the winch doing it and you need a new spare wheel..much money to sort

+1 for getting a wheel protector. Contact RLD on here. You could probably drive to him to collect as he's somewhere near Accrington IIRC

If you DO replace the removable hook like for like, get a security plate for it. Ryan Wild on here can help you there ... can't remember his username, sorry.

Most on here seem to fit Tow Trust fixed towbar if you go that route.

Having read how a towbar affects the rear crumple zone in an accident, I always used to remove my detachable one asap after use. Thumbs Up

Hi,

sadly it takes no longer to remove a "Removable" towbar with a key or without if you know what your doing Shocked

If you dont tow much get another removable take it off every time you use it,
if thats tintenting that also means when you get to site
if you tow most weeks look at a fixed bar

Thumbs Up

Hi all,

Yes, I have a fixed one available to fit.

We do quite a bit of towing, and i prefer the detachable one to the Fixed one.

Thinking of removing the spare wheel - even better way to secure it......

The intent of this post was also to raise awareness of the people out there doing the stealing.......
Rural crime needs stopping.

After approx. 15 years of D3/D4 ownership, one stolen removable is bad, but not as bad as it could have been.

Cheers

think you will find detachable tow bar recommended for occasional towing only...if you do lots,,probably better with fixed...that said removable rated at 3,5 tons...wheel protector essential

Hi,

I think LR have an issue in defining what is occasional in terms of towing Smile
Apart from having this one stolen, not had any problems with towing with the detachable tow bar on the D3 and D4 so far...... Except the recall on the D3..........

The fixed one I have is from my old D3.
I think it should fit the D4 with no problems/challenges......

Cheers

It's described as occasional because it must be removed between uses and stowed. If you're towing very regularly then this would be less than ideal and you might as well have a fixed one.

If you leave a detachable towbar in place permanently you run the risk of someone removing it for you (highly likely) or it corroding into place, where at some point the corrosion could cause the tow bar to drop out.

FWIW, when there was all the hoo-ha and recall over tow bars, I asked JLR (directly) what they considered to be occasional. I said that we towed a caravan once, maybe twice a month, which they said was definitely in their category of occasional. They clarified (to a point) that they regarded several times per week as not being occasional.

In the 13 years of D3/D4 ownership, thankfully I have never had any issues with the detachable tow bar, BUT I remove it whenever it’s not in use. That means, if we go away for a weekend, as soon as I get to the site, it’s removed. In the grand scale of things, how long does it take to attach or detach it?

As far as the spare wheel is concerned, as others have said, get the device from RLD. They are excellent products, and will keep the wheel safe and secure.

Hi all,

Update:

Whalley co-op car park have confirmed the tow bar was still in place when the vehicle left - CCTV

So - Tiggies Italian car park on the A59 approx. 18:30-19:40 is where the tow bar was taken.
