Part of the PDI procedure is to ensure that the vehicle has the latest uplevel of all software, so regardless of build date, the dealer should apply the latest patches prior to delivery of a new vehicle

If you've got WDS 13.4 installed, there isn't anything new for you.
The ability to check software levels has been available for a while now - the difference this time is that the computer decides whether you need the update, not the bloke pressing the keys on the T4.
WDS is on the way out, and is being replaced with the DVD based system. This may sound like a step forward, but consider also that the DVD system covers not only all LR models, but Jaguars too. Heaven knows what you may end up with as a result..............
... but the upload speed into teh car won't be any different ?? its still the same plug and socket connection ??? Just a thought ..
The hardware for the new IDS system is the same as for WDS, as for the software its just a newer version of the WDS software with support for Jaguars all on a DVD instead of CD-ROM.
I have yet too try one out for myself but from what ive been told its pretty sucky as the toughbook it runs on has a tiny screen.

Is there anyway that you can tell what version of software you are on without going to the dealer? Do us Aussies need to start making noises here about the recall, what does it cover? 2005 Disco 3 HSE in Zambezi + Ebony, Sat Nav, Active Locking Rear Diff and Cool Box

No need for recalls mate. The software improves the D3. I don't think there are any show stoppers in the machine these days.
Just tell your dealer that the engine pick up is a bit lazy compared to a mates D3. Mention that you heard he had patch 4 uploaded and it cured the problem
Or wait till your next scheduled service... they should do it then as a matter of course.
