Strange noise just above tick over

Its difficult to describe but its crossed between a whirring and whining noise coming from the centre of the engine bay when feathering the throttle, once above a 2000 rpm it disappears, or the engine noise takes over!
Wondered if it was the air con but all climate control is off and the noise is still there! although when the climate control on and fans blowing hard then it is there on tick over too!
Anyone had similar, hoping its not another fault developing, LR seem to have my disco more than i do recently! Big Cry

I had this last week after off roading. Think it was due to something getting dusty or dry. Gone now Shocked

It started after a "good drive" back from a night out in the week, the front of the disco was plastered with flies so maybe one has got somewhere it shouldnt! Whistle

Have had a similar issue after an of-roading event involving lots of mud.

That was 4 months ago and the symptom is still there.. Confused Car has been thoroughly washed several times since then...

I've not yet given up on sorting it, comforting that others are experiencing similar symptoms...

In my quest to resolve, I've had the ARB bushings changed at the front as well as the lower front a-arm bushings (the latter under warranty). No effect! Big Cry

Checked that too NJF, pulley working fine in my case Confused

Short of dismantling the viscous fan to clean further and cleaning the compressor housing (just in case it's the cause of messing the car harmonics) I have eliminated almost everything I think... Sad

Might just be coincidence but just had my alternator replaced today as the battery light was on, and now the noise has gone completely. I wonder if this is a sign of alternator problems developing Question The noise had been getting worse of late, especially during the hot weather when i suppose its under more strain.
