Stuck multi height tow bar

I am having issues with my tow bar and trawled the the threads but still need some advice.

I Have the LR3 fixed multi height towbar and naively thought its removal would be easy.

I did not have the key so found someone who supplied a key to fit.

The key never worked and after cleaning the lock, soaking the lock with WD40 still would not budge.

I ordered a replacement green latch with new key and worked out a way to release it ( or so I thought!)

I now have a green latch that is effectively unlocked but will not turn beyond 180 dgrees anticlockwise. I assume that the latch needs to be turned more much more anticlockwise?

Assuming the internals have seized have soaked bothe end near the spare wheel and the latch but it still does not shift.

Is there anything else I can do?

The key move a pin that locks into a hole on the back of the receiver. plenty of WD40 in the back should help. You may need to use a drift to persuade it back in if it is really seized

after liberally dosing the lock mechanism and also up into the receiver hole (in the crossmember) with WD40 over a couple of days I was finding the key turning and the green knob was also rotating but the whole unit wouldn't drop out.

I undid the bolts holding the diagonal braces in place.

More WD40........ and gentle taps with a hammer on the tow bar whilst rotating the green knob did the trick.

CAUTION......when it drops, IT DROPS and will punish any toes that happen to be underneath Shocked

When you have turned the green knob as far as you can, try pulling it out and then turning it some more.

A word of caution when hitting the most obvious place (a bulge in the casting) as this is where the mechanism sits and I saw one that had been deformed trapping the sliding pin in the locked position

Hi,
not trying to teach you to suck eggs (what does that ever mean Question )

but have you seen/tried to remove one before and see how they work, its easier to work out whats going on and how far you need to turn the handle, ask anyone with one of the removable type bars as I think they work the same and see whats moving.

I have removed 5 or 6 now (removables never a fixed type) and none have needed more than a good tap to break the seal on one that had been on about 4 years.

worth a try.

Thumbs Up
