Hi Ant/Gary,

Thanks again for your kind assistance. When I get home on Friday I will check out the alternator wiring and also the temperatures as requested.

My wife had the car out today and said that the wipers are now acting up. If she tries to turn them on interval mode they go to the fastest setting and when she turns them off they stop at the position they were at the time. She has to time it right to stop them at the bottom of the sweep.

Goodness knows if this is related!

Fingers crossed can get it checked out at ur earliest opportunity

Chat soon mate

Good morning all,

Just a thought, now that the wipers are playing up would I be correct in my assumption that it is RELAYS 2 and 3 that control this function? It just seems strange that I've got RELAY 4 clicking and now an issue presenting itself from an adjacent RELAY.

I am not at home at the moment but will be back on Friday.

I would like to lift the entire fusebox up to examine the underside of this area for signs of short/corrosion (the top of the relay/fuse area looks clean). Is this easy to do? I can release the bottom end of the fusebox but it's difficult to lift it all up due to the wiring loom anchoring it from the top.

Also, what relay spec do I need to replace RELAYS 2/3/4? I would like to order new ones to discount the possibility of dodgy relays.

Thanks.

Hi

This is going to sound daft , wonder if there’s been any water ingress

There is a knack to get that bottom cover off , more than happy to help walk u through it when u get home , how are u for tools plse as well need some small sockets , side cutters

The large loom that goes down to the passenger side fuse box is at the back of the engines fuse box so indeed that’s the bit in being super careful in not pulling any wires , could the alternator be overcharging and therefore shuts down systems to protect them ???

Will be interesting to also using the MM to see what the alternator amperage output is

But of course once u get back can start delving into it some more

Hope that helps Thumbs Up

Thanks very much Gary. That's an interesting piece reference the auto-shed mode of the alternator. I will have a look through those manuals this evening to try and improve my knowledge of the systems.

Reference the possibility of water into the fusebox/relays; this is definitely a possibility because I have reason to suspect that the garage who sold me the vehicle had pressure washed the engine bay. The top of the fusebox and what I can see of the contacts show no signs of corrosion but I can't tell what's underneath. Also, it's completely feasible that there's been water ingress to the alternator.

Lots to read and lots to try this weekend!

Hi mate

Ur so welcome and indeed also found it interesting where it starts shutting the system down

So maybe, just maybe thats what the alternator is doing as it warms up , then creates a spike causing excessive voltage to the relays causing them to click and then restricts the suspension etc as per manual

That’s very interesting ref the water , maybe they used some of that spray on cleaning foam that’s caused corrosion or getting into the contacts / irretrievably caused damage

Plse let me know when ur ready as thinking if we should as well test what amps the alternator is putting out, engine running , everything turned off and then on to load it , then have a visual check for any loose wires, cleaning the connections etc and see if that makes a difference , plus testing them after with the MM , think that will be as far as we can go without an oscilloscope for the alternator but at least we can test and check all the above to give us a fighting chance

Will find the pics I saved as well ref the engines fuse box, took them at each stage like a walk through

Did ur contact cleaner turn up plse as will come in useful , plus might be a good idea to remove the front drivers side inner wheel arch liner in advance for access when we start delving into it further unless of course u haven’t put it back yet

Sorry I’m rambling again , lol

Stay safe and chat soon

Also just in case these are the clips u might need for the inner plastic wheel arch liner, Cheaper than buying from LR

Dimensions

To fit hole size: 8mm / Head/Collar width: 20mm

Cheers Gary,

I will be working on the car on saturday morning.

It's certainly a strange issue. Sometimes when I first turn the ignition on RELAY 4 isn't clicking but if I leave the ignition on for a while it will start clicking, that's without even running the engine.

It would be great to work through all of the possible alternator tests I could do. Including a check of how the wiring should be.

I've got the contact cleaner and also the battery terminal grease.

Hi mate

No probs , u saying that ref the ign have u tried wiggling the ign key to see if the clicking stops on the relays etc , haven’t heard of issues with ignitions but seeing it’s in series from the battery fuse boxes etc thought I would just mention it as an idea

Of course don’t want to go off on a tangent but suppose thinking if it could possibly be an issue

Awesome , getting the spray and grease

No worries , ref alternator , etc

So think some of the things we could plse start with are

Checking the amps at the battery , with engine running with nothing turned on, then with ac, heater, windscreen heater etc , etc, revs to around 2,500 rpm and then see what the amps are

Removing drivers side front wheel arch liner to gain access to that large earth point , visuals inspection , clean using maybe Emery cloth , wire brush for threads , grease all the earth and positive posts , can then check them for continuity to ensure there 100% ,

then using the contact cleaner for alternators connector plug , Checking alternator’s connections and cables connection posts, also if I may plse add, always ensure battery is disconnected when doing a continuity and ohms tests

Checking live data on temperature sensors when engine is cold

Think that will be enough to go through and see what results / findings

Hope that helps a little

Just got home, put the battery on charge overnight and will get to it tomorrow!

I'll do all the test you mention Gary and report back tomorrow once I'm done. Hopefully about 11am.

Very Happy

Okey doke. I've got the OSF wheel off and removed the arch liner. I have identified an earth point on the left as you look into the arch which has a smallish wire attached and also a major earth point to the right which has a much thicker cable attached via 2 contact points, one on the body and one on the chassis. I've removed all 3 earth points, cleaned them, greased them, reattached and then checked for continuity from the battery neg terminal and all appears good at each.

I can see the alternator but even with the engine plates removed below and the small plastic corner cover removed I can't get to the alternator attachment points or plug to check the connections or spray some cleaner. It is really difficult to get to with pipes/chassis etc in the way.

I have taken the following readings at the battery:

Engine Off, Ignition On
12.67 VDC
4.78 ADC

Engine On, No Loading or revs
14.15 VDC
5.47 ADC

Engine On, Lights on, Heated screens on, heated seats on, AC fans on max
12.36 VDC with periodic dips to 12.21 VDC
4.64 ADC with periodic dips to 4.53 ADC

As Above but revving to 2500 RPM
12.92 VDC with periodic dips to 12.55 VDC
4.93 ADC

The periodic dips mentioned above are accompanied by the slight change in engine note I was describing in an earlier post.

Reference my wiper issue, that was my fault, when last messing around with RELAYS 2,3 and 4 I accidentally left them in the wrong order. RELAYS 2 and 3 are all black but RELAY 4 has a stripe on it. I had left them in the wrong order. Putting them back in the correct order has solved the wiper issue.

I still have the clicking RELAY 4!

Is all of the above pointing towards a knackered alternator?
