Tail gate squeak - appropriate lubricant?

Morning All

Before I get flamed, yes I have searched the forum for this answer but not found anything to date.

I’m sure a bit of WD40 will work, but before I use a wet lubricant on something which might not like it, does anybody know what or if you can lubricate the top tail gate cylinders (sorry can’t remember what you call them) and what’s best to use. Vehicle is a 2012 MY HSE with 55k. Probably over worrying after some bad experiences at work with dry, wet and no lubricant equipment.

Thanks

Darren.

Is your trade a gigolo for the older person? Shocked

Is it your rams that are dry or your hinges that are squeaking?

The gas struts are so cheap to replace I would just renew them.... i’ll Try and find the link.. Very Happy

These are cheap as chips and have been used by many on the forum... if you search the forum they will give you the right part number or pressure you need.... Very Happy

Lots on here if you search tailgate struts.....

Is the squeak coming from the ram or possibly the ball joint....?? Beware if it’s coming from the ball joint as these have a habit of unwinding themselves from the bodywork at the top mounting point and will cause a world of pain if not screwed in right.... the captive nut falls off the back and it’s a hell of a job getting it back up there inside the bodywork... Very Happy

Thanks FC, will take a look and see if I can localise the squeak.... have seen the SGS struts and also bought from them in the past, so always an option.

In regards to my trade 😜 nothing as exciting as that, just had engineers not use their brain and check what equipment should be lubricated with before chucking a load of grease on them. Especially lubrication free conveyors..... nicely knackered with the grease and massive expense to replace all of them.

Cheers all 😃😃😃

Mine was squeeking last week. Sprayed some WD40 on a rag and rubbed it over the rods squeak gone. Might be worth a try before more drastic efforts. Thumbs Up

It's normally the plastic guides that squeak, silicone grease will cure it.

I use 3 in 1 oil as it is silicone based.

Thanks All, appreciate the feedback. I tried the rag with wd40 and some around the connection points and since applying has gone completely silence.... 😋

Will keep an eye on it and certainly think some thicker 3 in 1 or similar would probably last longer on the rotation/connection points.

If they do start to sag a bit though I will certainly be ordering some new ones from SGS so thanks for the links guys.

My squeak was back today but this time I used silicon spray. Gone again.. Didn't affect my SWMBO. Haven't managed to get rid of her, even after fifty two years. Rolling with laughter
