Tailgate cubby hole rust?

Hi! I have a 2013 D4 HSE, never been off-road as far as I know. There appears to be moisture and rust in the rear left cubby hole (where the tow bar is kept). I have taken the rear light unit off and no sign of anything untoward on the outside of the vehicle. Anyone experienced this, or any ideas where the moisture is coming from? After leaving the car parked in heavy rain it didn’t get worse, so I assume it’s caused by condensation or road spray from underneath the vehicle.

it's seems sealant, not rust...

Moisture should be condensation.

check to see if any of the clips that hold the outside wheel arch trim are missing (check in the cubby hole)just picked my new to me disco 4 and found the previous owners doc stored in there all wet, when I looked there was 2x clips missing which then leaves a hole for rain to run behind the outer trim and into the cubby hole

The wheel arch clips - are they the ones in the attached photo?

Just looks a bit bodgy. But I’m no expert so have no idea. Just noticed it when I compared the 2 pictures.

Found some shattered glass in the other cubbyhole which would suggest something has happened. So is it rust or sealant and should I be overly concerned? No external signs of damage...

We need a betetr quality pic so say what it is, but simple check would be to poke it with a small screwdriver, if it gives its sealant, if paint and dark bits fall off its rust!

The glass was due to ski’s - so no collision involved!

No rear light guards. On closer inspection the two rivnuts (or whatever they are) seem to be placed directly beneath the rear light unit. See attached photo of the rear exterior of my car.
