Now I know I'm going to get shot down in flames for this but here goes...
I bought my D3 with about 15,000 miles on from a main LR dealer about a month ago. Since then, for one reason or another, I have had the chance to drive quite a few TDV6 D3's with more and less mileage on. Because of this I can say without exception that mine is the most clackety of them all. While all the other vehicles sound smooth and refined, mine sounds like a doggy imported td5 D2 with 200,000 hard miles on it - you know that tinny diesel knocking they do. My wife says it sounds like tappets (which considering she drives a diesel Berlingo van, is not good)
Don't get me wrong this diesel tapping doesn't happen all the time - at idle it's fine and even under load or revving it sounds sweet. However, when I gently cruise with a very light throttle (in traffic for instance) or lightly accelerate, it sounds like a bonnet full of midgets practicing Riverdance with a steel band!
I've tried all the different fuel types without change and because I sound so wet trying to explain this noise to the dealers large mechanic (he told me all engines are different) I just wondered if anyone had an idea what might be causing it? 2005 D3 HSE

Some have expressed the same problem, (and been slated for it), even though some TDV6's tap all the time. ..............it's a diesel....live with it......... OR ........drain the oil, fill it up with EP90 and sell it quick. BTW...Tried LR customer relations route, and SMMT....... They couldn't care bl**dy less, all in cahouts with one another.

Ah, looks like I'm not alone then...
I was afraid I'd get an answer like "live with it"
Looks like someone else did the EP90 trick, which is why I've got it!
There must be a solution for those of us that have this problem - it can't be right? 2005 D3 HSE

Sorry, I should have said that...
Mine's September 05 and I think one of the last 05MY so it looks like I may have another problem. 2005 D3 HSE

Mines a Sept 05 build.....(06MY).........our engines must have been built by someone on work experience. and your damned right crews control, 'it isn't right' at all, but try telling LR this, and all you get are pathetic generalisations like you have probably heard from the knucklehead at your dealership. The EP 90 thing is not something I would ever do personally, and I doubt that this type of thing has been done to you, but what I will say is that one particular dealership had my car for 2 days looking into this problem, and did absolutely naff all about it, except overfill the engine oil by a litre ,in an attempt to mask the tapping noise, just to put you in the picture as to the kind of people that are working here and now in LR dealerships across the country.

stupid q' , but is the tappety noise definitely coming from the engine? I only ask as if the EGR valve(s) are misbehaving then you can get an intermittant 'rattly' noise as they flap open and shut rapidly. My D3 is a similar vintage as your ones (Sep '05) and I've not noticed it being particularly rattly really I'm afraid.
M and theeeeennn......???

Well mine, at least, produces a continual mechanical tapping (sounds as if one tappet is not taking up the clearance fully, or may even be piston slap), awful at idle, and produces a crescendo of mechanical 'clatter' when you rev it. Accelerating in it, it sounds as if I'm driving over a carpet of eggshells which are all shattering, but it's nothing to do with the road, it is definately the engine.

CARPET of eggshells - you're lucky - I dream of carpet!!!
I'm pretty sure it's from the engine, but I'll have a good check tomorrow.
I am seriously considering the 30 day thing - which I'm just inside - but I'm not sure what the situation is if I have made alterations to the vehicle? For work insurance purposes I needed to fit superglass at the back so it can't be smashed. 2005 D3 HSE

Tell them you want to return it and I'm sure they'll do all they can to put it right.

Just found out today that the used 30 day guarantee is 30 day or 1000 miles - I didn't read the small print!
As I've done over 2000, looks like I'm stuck...

Further to the above - there's nothing my dealer can/will do but I'm learning to live with it and I must be honest I still have a big grin on my face every time I drive the Disco. (I can always turn the radio up)
What I have noticed though is that if I drive exclusively on Shell diesel, after a tankful it gets a lot quieter? Much more of a burble, a lot less tinny... Still not perfect - but much better. I thought it was my imagination at first but even my neighbour commented on how much quieter it was.
Trouble now is, I have to waste half a tank just driving around looking for Shell - anyone know of an additive that will give the same effect? 2005 D3 HSE

trying the Millers tuff in my '05 as we speak
My D3 at light throttle openings is very definetely a diesel so a bit less clatter would be nice
Done 400 miles so far on the tank and looking good, mpg is up on normal (28 currently) ....unfortunately anything else is subjective as for most of this tank the rain beating on teh windscreen and wind buffetting the car has been far louder than teh engine!!!! end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......
