I am just about to order a Discovery 3 TDv6 GS,(I think). It could still be a Touareg! Can anyone tell me whether the TDv6 engine has chain driven cams or V belts that need changing periodically? Thanks.

Err I think it does have belts. Slimer is that not the Petrol V6 (which you don't get in the UK) ?
Engine: Ford/PSA/Jaguar V6 Diesel
Displacement: 2,720 cc
Bore & Stroke: 81.0 x 88.0 mm
Max power (EEC): 147kW/200 PS or 152 kW/207 PS (depending on application)
Max torque (EEC): Up to 440 Nm (depending on application)
Cylinder block: 60 deg V, Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) cross-bolted block
with ladder frame stiffener
Crankshaft: Forged steel, fillet rolled
Main bearings: Four, with 4-bolt mains
Pistons: Cast aluminium bowl design, double wave gallery cooling
Compression ratio: 17.3:1
Connecting rods: Fracture split steel rod with trumpeted bore in small end
Cylinder heads: High strength aluminium
Valve train: DOHC with four-valves per cylinder
Fuel system: 1650 bar, Piezo-actuated, common rail direct injection
Primary Drive: Belt driven camshafts and fuel injection pump. Direct, crankshaft
driven oil pump
Emissions: Euro Stage IV capable

From what I understand the only chain iro the camshafts is a small chain connecting the two camshafts on each bank (DOHC)

Okay my FU!
Oh! You meant the TDV6
Quote:Primary drive is provided by a single toothed belt from the crankshaft to the exhaust camshaft gears of each cylinder bank via two idler pulleys and a tensioner. Timing belt adjustment is carried out by an eccentric type tensioner mounted on the RH front face of the cylinder block.
Secondary drive is provided by two short crossover chains, which transfer drive from the exhaust camshaft gears to the inlet camshaft gears. The crossover drives are located at the rear of the RH cylinder bank and the front of the LH cylinder bank. This allows for a much shorter and simpler run for the main camshaft drive belt at the front of the engine. Each crossover chain is tensioned via an automatic chain tensioner, which acts directly on the chains via a guide rail. The tensioners are located between the exhaust and inlet camshafts at the front or rear of the cylinder head, depending on the cylinder bank.
The End

With the amount of people putting unleaded in their V6's, you probaly had the correct engine anyway
As a side note what is the service interval for the belt replacement ?
