I tempted fate and got bitten...
So, having boasted that my D3 gets me to where I want to go 4 times out of 5, I was warned!
Zero degrees, and started ok, but radio stayed in ‘low power mode’; screen heaters on, seat warmer on, fans going, fbh running, lights on, radio going.
Pull off but radio stays low in low power - brand new agm battery in the car
With recent alternator chat on here, little worried.
‘I know’ I think, I’ll plug the IID in!’
Whole car shuts down. Flashers on. Transmission fault. E on gear selector. Parking brake fault. Suspension fault. Radio reads ‘system fault. Shutting down’
Switched off and unplugged IID but fault persisted for about 5 mins until it reset.
Absolutely bricked it as heading to station for trip tow conference.
Suggestions?

These are one of the cheapest and most useful things to have in any car, or for that matter any machine with an engine.

Sounds like a voltage issue
Would be worth checking alternator to make sure it is charging and also battery state.

When you start the car, don't turn on all the heaters! The screen and seat heaters have a huge draw, and the alternator can't keep up at tickover. If the battery is already weak, your on a looser from the start.
I like to start mine without anything on, then hold the revs at about 1500 for a bit, before turning on the heated screen. Heated seats only once driving, and all is well with the car. Richard

It reads like you plugged the iid in whilst the car was running?
If so, don’t... it doesn’t like it. In my experience anyway.

Pretend I’m really thick, it’s easy I promise!
If I have a live voltmeter like this what should I be looking at. Ball-park figures for good / ok / bad?
Am I correct this measures alternator output vs load? If it’s low I’ve got too big a load or failing alternator?
Thanks
Richard

Don’t i know it!
Mind you, got back to train station this evening. Voltage at 11.8v after 3 days sitting in car park.
6°c, turned lights, fan, radio off. Waited for glow plug lamp to go out.
Started straight up without any of the electrics dropping at all, voltage didn’t drop lower, and went straight up to 15.3 for a few mins then settled to 15 for a while.
Old battery, everything would shut down!
My thoughts are that I may have some dodgy wiring at the OBD2 socket and my roughly putting the IID in while driving caused a break or a short somewhere on the CANBUS causing the ‘crash mode’ to trigger.
Seems fine atm but guess I need to go over it carefully when time allows

Yup, I did.
Not had an issue with doing this before, but did have the car go into ‘crash mode’ once before while IID was already plugged in.
That occasion I narrowed it down to the brake pedal switch (or so I have thought) but this occasion it all happened as soon as I plugged the IID in.
Last time, I queried Pat on it, just in case, and he did cite ‘loose OBD terminals’ on the socket as being a potential issue, but thought it unlikely.
