Terrain Response

I don't know if I'm fooling myself, but whenever the temperature indicator shows the snowflake, I switch the TR to Grass, Gravel and Snow.

I typically drive pretty carefully anyway - but does changing the TR make much difference on an icy road?

Grass/Snow on TR will give you a slower initial throttle response, the traction control is more sensitive to wheel spin, the centre diff lock becomes active and it engages HDC.

I've played with HDC on an icy hill and it crawled down very calmly. I got out to have a walk about and could barely stand up on the slope!

If the road is dry tarmac it won't help. But if it's wet or icy or snow or anything else slippery it will help a lot.

I leave it as normal even at low temperatures if it's dry.

To me the system proved itself in the snow we had at the beginning of the year.

Terrain Response can be thought of as a tyre change/upgrade on the fly - at least for going forward. On summer tyres, snow mode will give you traction (not braking!) more akin to an all season or winter tyre. In mud, mud mode will give you traction on road tyres that an all terrain would give on an "ordinary" 4x4.

Obviously this is somewhat simplistic but gives an idea. Stick a better tyre on the vehicle and TR will help that too.

I cannot wait for the snow and ice. It will be the first time I turn the knob for real. I test drove a D4 at Gaydon when they launched it and they had a skid ring set up. It was incredible what snow mode did for the car.

I used to do off road challenges in my defender. The one thing I will say about the tr system is don’t try to drive the car as you would without aids. You or at least I found my self fighting with the tr system and making things worse.

If I switch mine to grass gravel and snow it doesn’t show the diff lock. Could I have a problem?
Or can someone explain to me when center and rear diffs should show locked on the 4x4 info screen.

Grass/Gravel/Snow Terrain mode modifies the throttle progression to make it less aggressive and reduces the risk of wheel spin. I believe it also pulls away in 2nd gear.

Not only that, the traction control, DSC, transmission gear shifts, suspension settings and transfer box calibration is all changed to make for a safer driving experience.

It's the only terrain mode that is used long term and also allows cruise control to work. The reason is that you could need it for 3 or 4 months of the year in certain markets.

It has been said that using GGS reduces fuel consumption by making the throttle less sensitive.

If you want a lot of fun in the snow select Sand Mode, go in to manual mode (auto) and turn DSC off, you'll be able to drift then.

It depends on the level of talent the driver possesses. I've done both!
