Thick black dust on front wheel rims. |
|
Hello,
Both front rims are constantly covered with black dust all the time!
I clean them every couple of weeks but then they get covered again.
I am assuming that it is brake dust but the brakes are fine, discs seem fine from external inspection, brake pads about half used, car braking very well, so the braking system seems in tip top shape.
I have not checked the discs fully close up or removed the wheel yet.
D3, 2,7, V6, SE, 170K kms, 2005.
Any ideas what to look at?
Cheers.

Combination of cheap brake pads and heavy braking, clean them off with a proprietary alloy cleaner that contain a mild acid and then give them a good wax polish, in the mean time don't brake so hard long term to eradicate it if you like braking hard fit ceramic brake pads when these have worn out, which won't be very long It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I fitted akebono ceramic pads all around with ebc rotors and it reduced the dust by 90% 16 D4 Landmark

How does the brakes perform with ceramic pads do they need to be up to temperature?

No, just like ordinary pads only better, last longer, no squealing and no dust. just cost a bit more It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Haven’t noticed any difference in performance, just a massive reduction in dust. 16 D4 Landmark

I use Drilled and vented discs, and ebc greenstuff pads. Not expensive, from ribble valley 4x4. fleabay..
No better at braking, than standard, however hell of a lot less dust. Been using them years.

Another vote for Greenstuff here, wheels stay clean for weeks.
Also worth using an alloy wheel cleaner that has no acid, that way your brake callipers dont get stripped then go rusty.

Thanks for the info.
I was discussing the topic of ceramic brakes with my colleague who mentioned that ceramic brakes wear down the discs much faster than standard brake pads and that they can also squeel like a banshee when very hot.
I like the look and specs of the TRW ceramic brake pads GDB 1632 DTE.
Any experience or advice on this?
Thanks.

I tried some ceramic ones from Terrafirma I think, whoow, they lasted a day then out and in the bin, no pedal feel whatsoever, wooden brakes and not much stopping power to speak of, back to Greenstuff and its was business as normal.
I think the TRW ones are popular as they are cheap.
I also think the Terrafirma ones are just TRW rebranded.

EBC Rotors GD1339
Akebono Pads EUR1098
This is only 2 of the 4 parts that I used - front / rear rotors and pads are different part numbers. Can’t find the other part numbers. If you google at least this gives you idea on cost. Same performance just reduced dust. 16 D4 Landmark
