Thicko question - how to remove roof bars

Preparing myself for the inevitable derision, I am compelled to ask the following question:

How the Censored do you take the LR roof bars off? Mine were supplied and fitted by the stealer when I picked the thing up and have been on ever since. Now I want to take them off and I find it surprisingly hard to work out how. Embarassed

I know I have to unlock the ends with the key (obviously), and it seems likely that I have to make sure the resulting fold-out tab lines up with one of the 'cut-outs' in the roof rail. But what then? I thought they'd just lift out at that point, put it seems not. Surely I don't have to use the allen key as well do I?

I'm sure I'm being thick. Is there a knack to this? Help!

Nigel

You probably will have to get the allen key out. In order to lock the bars properly in position I find it necessary to put the bars on the car and where I want them on the rails, then push the ends together a little and tighten up on the allen key. To remove, loosen with the key on each end (slip the little tabs out once you've unlocked the plastic flaps with the key) then move the bars to the wide slot on the rails and they'll lift out.

Yes you will have to loosen the screws with the allen key, as they secure the bar ends at the right width. Loosening these off a bit will allow the bars width to adjust as you slide them along the roof rails. Thumbs Up

they'll also slide MUCH easier with a little wd40 on the slide track, otherwise you have to keep them perfectly perpendicular to get them to move..

Thanks for the tips guys, but I'm still non the wiser.

I've loosened the allen keys on the top, and now things shift around much more easily, right enough. But I still can't figure out how to get the Censored things out of the rail Exclamation

Here's a photo:

The inside part of the base of the end-piece (ringed) is still under the over-hanging bit of the rail, so how can it lift out Question Question

I'm so confused! God this is embarrasing... Embarassed

You need to slide the crossbars towards the larger gaps in the rails, it then pulls out

as mac says, there's only 2 or maybe 3 slots that you can actually remove the bars through, look for cut outs on the inside AND outside of the track, they'll be much bigger thatn the smaller ones, if that makes sense..

Laughing Laughing Laughing

What a Censored I am Exclamation

Thanks MacLeod. I'd just gone back out and realised that for myself! Can't believe I hadn't spotted them before, but just assumed the bars came out via the little notches on the inside edge.

For anyone equally daft who reads this in the future, here's the 'exit notches' in question:
