Ticking noise from engine and lack of power

Hi All

My D3 has recently started making a ticking noise which comes from the nearside of the engine for about 10 seconds after it is started and then disappears. This has been accompanied by a lack of power at low revs (like when trying to pull away - makes for some exciting junctions!!) and an increase in black smoke - although these symptoms seem to come and go a bit and are not happening at the same time as the ticking. There are no warning lights and otherwise it drives fine. It is a 55,000 mile manual diesel.

Any ideas??

Does the power kick back in at about 2300-2500 rpm? If so, it sounds very likely that it could be an EGR valve problem.

If it is - cure is simple and cheap! Lots of posts about it here, but it involves blanking off the EGR valves (using a custom made blanking plate or 2x 2p coins!) and removing a 'butterfly'. Wink

Clouds of black smoke could be a number of things - poss related to above, but the other cheap(ish) thing to check is the intercooler hose - usually splits along the top.

If it's neither of these, could be more serious - the turbo seems to be a standard suspect. Sad

Thanks for info. As an update I had to do a trip from Cheshire to Wiltshire yesterday and on the way back the lack of power got so bad that the car was nearly undriveable below 2300rpm. Called out LRA (who came within 20 mins) and your diagnosis was correct, AC, a passenger side EGR problem which the LRA guy blocked off with a 2p coin and sent me on my way. Have to say very impressed with LRA - turned up quickly, very professional and from calling them to resuming my journey was less than an hour. He couldn't ID the ticking noise but did think it should be checked out...

Now just got to get it booked in for a new EGR valve, hopefully under warranty!

Thanks again for the advice.

Glad you've sorted it - and even better, while still under warranty. Razz

Hi,

I too got the 'ticking noise' on startup for a couple of seconds. To be honest I just put it down to oil getting to the top of the engine . ie; when the engine is stopped all the oil is at the bottom of the engine. On start up the oil is pumped round the engine and quieten downs whatever was 'ticking'.

Never really saw it as a problem, as I have had other cars and bikes do the same.

But hey if someone out there knows what it is and that I need to worry about it, please let me know ASAP Thumbs Up

Agree with the ticking noise on startup being the hydraulic tappets, best to check the oil level and use a engine flush at next service

Ian, do Dealers/you use an engine flush as a matter of course on oil changes?

Haven't done a DIY oil change in the D3 yet but I always stick a bottle of Forte engine flush in the D1 for 20 minutes on idle before changing the oil.
