Got the head back on today and threw the timing belt on just to make sure it all turns over OK. Result it's turning very smoothly now, must have had a few bent valves because the old head was really stiff...

Thanks, but not quite! I've done the bare minimum just to turn it over by hand, I'll start putting bits back on over the weekend and hopefully report back a working Disco within the week.

Thanks again for all your help Thumbs Up

make sure you have the black bracket on the top of the head at the back.

You can only get 1 bolt in, if you forget. Rolling Eyes (and that's not easy) It supports the EGR cooler pipe

Yes, got that little guy on before I put the head back!

Any reason not to omit the egr coolers? EGR Valves are blanked already.

I considered it but.

1) The coolant temperature sensor gets no flow of coolant so reads incorrectly
2) I decided it was too much hassle

Fitting the rear belt and I think I've been sent the wrong belt, it's slightly larger than the one that came off.

Dayco belt 18 035045 - 94989. The label on the box looks OK?

I used dayco.

If it’s different. It’s wrong.

Reuse the old one

There should be 82 teeth on the rear belt, 195 on the front.

I've got 85 teeth on the new belt 82 on the old.

Anyone know if they are different for the Jags? I got the kit from jgs4x4.

85 toothed belt is for the older models, LR did a recall early on and most went to the smaller 82 toothed belt.

I always carry both as when I have come to change them in the past the 85 toothed belt still crops up.

I first came accross years ago when I tried to fit a smal belt on a 85 toothed pulley.

Flack Thumbs Up

Shocked All the codes stack up and look correct.

I'll need to replace the belt as its due so the old one can't go back on.

That's the one that came with the kit Confused

Edit - thanks for the reply Flack that clears it up! Bet that involved some excellent swearing! Fortunately my belt was to big so it was obvious 😁

Just a quick update for anyone reading, the cars now done around 200 miles and drives great. We've been going gentle on it with very little load. I plan to service it again at 1000 miles but in the interim is there anything I should be going over to make sure it's all OK?

It's also really slow to start in the mornings taking 2 cranks of the key, then a good puff of smoke out of the exhaust. I did have a slight fuel leak on the drivers side but I've sorted that now and it seems OK. Still difficult to start though and the mornings aren't really cold.

Stupidly and I don't know why but I'm kicking myself for it now. I didn't change the glow plugs while the heads were off. After a minute of idling it's as smooth as always. Any suggestions?

good to know Thumbs Up

I did say change the glowplugs, however I suspect the fault is probably the injectors?
Did you change these? or did no.1 go back in no.1 hole?
