Timing ARGH!

Getting the car back together after replacing the drivers side head due to the oil pump failure. Passenger side fortunately rotated freely and looked OK. The drivers side cam chain had snapped but the passenger side was fine.

Timed the engine up with the pins but it's locking up after half a turn and I can almost feel the contact in the head. I used the flywheel hole with the flat spots and pins in the cam so cant see how it'd be out.

Any ideas? [/b]

How did you time the cam chains?

The cam chain was timed using the dark colour links on the notches.

Thanks for your write up BTW, fancy a trip to South Wales?!

if you remove injector cyl 1
And put a screwdriver down the hole.
When you are at TDC the piston 1 should be at the top

The cam sprockets can turn in the cams
Have you replaced the cams ?

The starter timing tool was in place with cylinder head off and cylinder 1 was at the top. I used the whole second hand head and didn't check that it was lined up before fitting.

I did see an arrow lining up with some code though? Not sure what the alignment process is for the cams sprockets.

Next to the cam sprockets is a square mark.
This should line up with the chain coloured links

If you are still having problems loosen the inlet cam on the bent head
So it’s no longer pushing valves down and then try and rotate engine

Great, cheers I'll try that although I'm sure it's contacting on the replacement head.

Yeah that’s what I meant sorry.

Or you may find the left head is worse than you first thought.

If the left head is dead it'll be off to have a replacement engine or possibly stripped for parts, really hope its not that!

I think the lobes can also turn on the cam?

I guess today will be spent going through it methodically checking everything.

Lobes turning on a cam sounds insane. The engine designers really were dicing with death on this one huh?

Cam lobes are usually made seperatley then pressed onto the shaft, its supposed to be more reliable with hardened lobes that will wear less and a softer shaft that is less likely to snap.
i rebuild dozens of Peugeot/Citroen engines that get to about 100k and then the lobes move round until the piston meets the valves.
I have never rebuilt heads on a Discovery but i would have thought the cams were one piece as they dont seem to suffer with this issue, but just because the chain looked ok doesnt mean you dont have a bent or stuck valve on that side.

Fingers crossed it can be done without removing the head and isn't a stuck valve but any top tips on removing the passenger side with the body on? I've got a spare head here and I'm feeling slightly more optimistic today. Plenty of whiskey has already been consumed...
