6" TomTom + Velcro + Hidden Wires = GS Satnav solution

Searching the forums and speaking to various ICE installers there seemed to be no solution to satnav for the GS

So I bought some sticky velcro from halfords for a few pound, a TomTom start 60 which has a flat mounted rear usb cable and went about making my own solution to the GS satnav problem.

The best bit about the GS dash is you can squeeze wires behind all the trim without removing any panels. The wires can only be seen at the point of power at the cig lighter.

Ive set the tomtom to go on and off with the car, and Im going to customise the startup and shutdown pictures that default to TomTom images to something like a land rover logo at start and maybe a blue screen of death on shutdown ;o)

In the future I would like to replace the tomtom with a Nexus7/ipad mini or something similar as they are much thinner under 1cm compared to the bulky 2cm + tomtoms. The only problem is at present the dimensions of 7inch tablets are that little to bit long and wide to fit in the gap because the surround around the screen is so large. Another possibility is the Samsung Galaxy note 3 as that would fit perfect and flush, but its not 199 like most tablets as its a phone its 500 pound.

Apologies if this has been posted before as it seems obvious now I have done it!

Good work Thumbs Up
We used to offer this as an option on low spec freelander 2's at the dealer I worked for in the uk, we used to hardwire them and they fitted perfectly, almost looked factory!

The buttons are for the radio, the radio screen is now covered by the TomTom! It was a 4inch screen which displays the radio station and any incoming calls but you can still use the numbers below to hit your preset radio stations and the answer/hang up buttons there and on the steering wheel.

Hi LcLc

looks interesting Thumbs Up
I am also looking for a possibility to pimp my standard audio system up with nav and thinking about mounting the nav screen in front of the original one. But my concerns are that I will loose the information shown on LR audio-system screen since they are not showing up on the central display between tacho and odometer like it does with the high line system. Is there any way to activate this feature (via Faultmate Question )

Has anyone got a pic of a galaxy note 3 fitted in the satnav screen area?

Hi, just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration to fit my unit in a similar way, although I have used a small thin fixing available from TomTom to attach my unit to the upper trim.

Just wondered if the Velcro method worked ok through the summer? If not, this may be a solution you can use...

Thumbs Up

Hi Parallax33

What you have done there looks really smart, and I would like to replicate this.

What is the thin bracket that you purchased from tom tom called? Or could you point me to a link to the correct one on website/eBay?

Which tom tom device did you go for?

Many thanks Smile

Hi Matt,

Thanks, I am trying to get it more integrated, but its going to be a slow moving project...

Here is what I have used so far;

TomTom Start 60 << this uses the ball joint type fitting. I rotated the unit so that the ball is at the top, and blacked out the TomTom logo so that it doesn't look too much like it should be stolen Smile

Bracket

Used the bit that looks like this;

and saw off the prongs so it will slide under the facia...

Finally pushed the cable behind the facia panels so that it fed down to the lower left power point on the center console.

Next step is to build this power into the glove box...
