How NOT to lock yourself out of your D3

Man, I had an epic and my heart has still not slowed.

Managed to lock myself out of my car in an underground car park with the engine still running. This is easy to do I discovered and have posted the "how" here as a warning to others.

1. Pulled up to unload the boot, hopped out found the boot locked (as always)
2. Returned to front and leant in and pressed the unlock button on the dash
3. Returned to open tailgate - still locked Rolling Eyes
4. Turned round as the drivers door gently closed under its own power (is this a new "Surprise & Delight"?)

Shocked LOCKED OUT Shocked
I had inadvertently pressed the lock button and NOT the unlock button.
Luckily (very) I had access to my spare key after a few phone calls and a 20 minute wait

BUT - WARNING
5. discovered remote key will not work with another key in the ignition (with or without engine running)
6. Panic started to come into the equation Crying or Very sad
7. removed access cover to manually unlock car
8. would not unlock - panic nearing overdrive Big Cry
9. considered breaking rear quarter light to reach in and open rear door from inside (not deadlocked as engine running)
10. final attempt at manually unlocking - worked (have to hold the key in the unlock position for a second or two)
11) now drinking wine from the bottle Neutral

EDIT - solution found, posted on second page
Life is what you make it.

Did the exact same thing in my D2 a few years ago, except I was trying to open the tail gate and asked my wife to press the unlock button.

Spare key was in the car Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Got a bloke from a local garage to use a long bit of wire to shove through the edge of the door and poke the unlock button. Slight damage to the paint work and door seal on my then brand new car was the result. Sad

I did this also. Thankfully, the drivers door was not fully closed. I managed to find a long piece of cardboard, fed it past the door rubber. I kept feeding it in until it was resting on the steering wheel which just happened to be in line with the unlock button. A quick push on the end of the cardboard and I was in. The lesson for me was never leave the key inside.

Tell me about it! Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Off roading 200 miles from spare key, stuck on top of a muddy hill with engine runnng & car locked. Luckily driver's door not completely closed so someone tried to click it too & it unlocked. Now "lock while drive off" is off when offroading!

Glad I am not the only "special" one out there. Every reply I am reading brings that "pit of the stomach sick feeling" back to me. Suppose we are all members of the Barred D3 Club now. Whistle

Ah well, live and learn. I will experiment with this "Click effect" described in a couple of these posts sometime but making sure the tailgate is open first.

L322 and RRSport are the same..................................... so I assume F2 will do it too! Fortunately the new 2007 Dfender has retained the old style "bunch of keys" attitude for the various locks and the ignition, AND they are still the pick-able sort of locks too! Nowt like simplicity!

I’ve gone out & tried this, admittedly on my RRS, but same systems as the D3 though.

I had “Wifey” sit in the car just in case. Shocked

Had the doors locked, engine running, transmission in park with handbrake on, opened drivers door & got out. Reached in hit the “lock” button on the dash which flipped the drivers door into the locked position & then closed the drivers door.

But when the door closed it unlocked straight away !!!

I tried a few different combinations, such as handbrake off, transmission set to “N” even going so far as to get herself to sit in the backseat, just in case the seatbelt presence sensor on the passenger seat had something to do with it.

But under no circumstances could I get the car to lock me out !!!

So I don't guys, but I certainly couldn't replicate the scenario Confused
