Help.... Any tricks to getting the half shaft out of the hub

Replacing my lower wishbone arms. I've backed out the half shaft gently via hammer and center punch. The end of the half shaft is just at the opening of the hub. It wont go back any further. Looks like the rubber housing around the knuckle may be hitting the shock.

any ideas?

I'm a bit scared to hit any harder. Looking at it when I bang away a few times I notice the shaft moves ever so slightly inward....then on the next hit it pops back out....almost like its hitting something....

It'll move in on the inner CV joint, it's snug to get it out, but so long as you've got he Disco jacked up and the suspension arm/ knuckle isn't involved in the jack support (if you follow) ie the suspension is at full extension on that corner it will come out.

You've got it out really. Get the suspension arm unbolted now,it doesn't need to come out any further for swapping the arm Thumbs Up

Disconnect the track rod end and upper control arm to hub carrier ball joint. The shaft can then be removed from the hub and the lower ball joint undone, remove the hub carrier to provide more access when cutting the bolts out Thumbs Up

I guess this is over my head. After undoing the upper control arm to hub carrier ball joint nut there is no movement at all. Both connections need to be broken loose.

Opposite lock is worse.....half shaft only moves 1/4" if that.

I was going to just cut all the bolts off including the ball joint nut. Problem is I'd still have an issue with putting the new one in I think. I cannot afford to be stuck in my garage with no transportation.

I dont think its far enough out. I need about 2.5" of clearance in order to get the ball joint bolt out. Measuring I only have about 1.5" maybe of clearance in that pic. Only option I can see is taking off the rotor and then use the gear puller to push out the half shaft.... I think I may just button everything up and let the pros handle it. I really was looking forward to just cutting everything off but cant afford to not be able to get the new ball joint bolt back in. Its a bit risky as I'd be stuck in my garage....

I hate to be the pessimist but in your picture it looks like you have done the same thing I did when I had to change the bearings.....

The brute force used to separate half shaft from hub caused the drive shaft to become separated from the outer cv joint. Didn't notice till I got it all back together as the cv boot alone looked be holding the shaft in the right place.

Worth double checking as it took some deft work with a needle file to dress the splines back to something near the right shape Big Cry

Fingers crossed for you.

The half shaft goes in and out just fine now. I can push it in and out of the hub. The issue is getting it all the way out which its not.... Twisted Evil
