Hi everyone, this is my first time posting for some advice.
I have a 2005 disco 3 with the automatic gearbox, I had the fluid changed in it a couple of years for the second time and it is currently on about 127k miles. Recently it has started to leak a bit of oil and I have had it looked at, it has been judged to be leaking out from round the wiring loom that enters the gearbox which they said was a common fault.
I was happy to get the garage to sort the problem for me and have been waiting a week for them to give me an estimate for the work. The estimate has just been sent to me, to replace the loom and carry out a gearbox service they require £1710. I was a little taken aback by this figure as it is a great deal more than the last gearbox service.
I’m happy to get the work done if this seems to be the going rate,
I’m also happy to do the work myself if any of you have recommendations of where to source the parts and if you think it is possible for a home garage tinkerer like myself.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post and any advice will be gratefully received.

Hi there, that sounds a lot. I could be wrong but I think the bit that is leaking is the mechatronic sleeve, I think you need to take the sump pan off, there are videos on YouTube to give you an idea of the work involved

Yes it’s a lot of work in labour.
Things in the way of removing sump. So you jack engine up a bit
Shouldn’t need a loom though.

I believe you can also unbolt the pan, cut the pipe off with a hacksaw and then remove the sump without need to jack the engine up. That does mean you have to change to a metal sump, which not everyone recommends.
Odd about the loom though, as stated. Simply replacing the seal should do the trick. A lot more work, and money, if you have to replace a loom.

Thanks guys for your replies and advice, I’m leaning towards doing it myself.
I’ve found the parts I need at lr parts. Is there anything else worth changing while I’m doing it to future proof the vehicle a little.
Thanks

Note the metal sumps tend to leak. So you may end up with a bigger leak that route!
Some ppl remove the valve body and change 4 tube/sleeve seals and a square seal.
But if it drives nice, don’t bother
