DPF problems in Discovery 4 anyone? Please help me out

Hi there!

I am new to this forum - even though there is already one Range Rover in the family Wink

Recently I have absolutely fallen in love with a 2015 / 2016 model Discovery 4 - 3 litre SDV6 (Diesel).
I really like the car and am committed to buying it but have been sligthly spooked by the fact that it's a diesel with the infamous DPF. The dealer of course says there can be no issues with it but am afraid of spending so much cash on something which I will end up having massive problems with.

Has anyone here ever had any DPF related issues in your Disco? Would be very grateful for any information on this point to see if I am blowing this out of proportion.

I usually drive between 10 and 20 km per day to and from work and around town. I occasionally (maybe once every 2 months) do a journey of 200 km on the motorway.

Thank you.

September 2015 D4 here and no problems with the DPF, but I do around 2,500 miles a month and am very rarely stuck in traffic. I hate to discourage anyone from one of these cars, they are brilliant, but I would be nervous of my DPF too if I were doing lots of short trips, in traffic, with few opportunities to give it a good blast. You need a petrol car for that sort of work Sad

If you're committed to buying it, you're in for a treat; you'll just need to include a few more decent trips to clear the car out a little Thumbs Up

I have a 2012 D4 with 72k miles on the clock. I have had it a year and during the last 6 months it's been a majority of short runs with the occasional run of 30 miles or so. I didn't see any evidence of any dpf issues during its previous service history and I have had none since purchase. It's been a very reliable vehicle to me.

I've had three D4's all with DPF and mostly short journeys and not a lot of motorway driving and I've never had a problem with a DPF Thumbs Up

Perhaps you are thinking about the few issues people have had re Adblue.

Thanks all for reverting so quickly - very strong Brit presence which is awesome!

@Hugh Martin - what do you mean by "occasional" - something like once a month I presume?

@jonno1 - I didn't know there was anything regarding AdBlue specifically. I have read that DPF can be a pain in the backside in general, have also heard it has been an issue with some Land / Range Rovers in the pasr.
About AdBlue though, what is the issue exactly? I heard it is (a) costly to top up and (b) may freeze in low temperatures. I am based in the countryside (beautiful Polish Tatra Mountains) where it occasionally gets pretty cold indeed... Please do give us a bit more background jonno1

Adblue is cheap .Don't be concerned about the cost of a refill. look up prices on the internet.

I used to commute into Sheffield city centre which mean 10 miles on the motorway and 4 miles city driving which usually took at least 25 minutes. Only ever had one DPF warning and that was on a 2.7 Jaguar XF. The Discovery never missed a beat but even if you do get the amber warning, it's a good excuse for another drive Thumbs Up

I always understood, provided the engine reaches optimum temperature (half way mark), then everything that should operate, will, which includes any DPF 'cleaning' and the like.

I will drive that extra bit with a diesel engine to ensure the temperature reaches its optimum.

Or have I got this wrong?

I'm on my 6th LR with a DPF and I'm lucky if I do 8000 miles a year, in fact my current one I've had for 6 months and only just broke 2000 miles. Never had a problem with any, my Disco at the moment has just done a regen, it gives a deep burble from the exhaust like its blown.

AdBlue I haven't had any problems with either, still has 15000 miles left in the tank so should be good until its first service. It's not expensive to buy and very easy to fill.
