Hi,
I have had my Disco 3 (2005) for 12 months now and In that time I have had to have the Handbrake fixed due to sreaming noises and sticking.
The guy at the garage as advised me to get rid because there is a good chance it will go again.
He says the Acuator gets moister, grit, and dirt inside and after a few months begins to seize up and thats what makes the noise.
I love this car and i was just on my way to part exchange it for a Mercedes or BMW but I really don't want to.
Is there any solution to fix this? I can't be arsed to get the thing fixed every 3 months like I have been doing! But I love the car. Apart from this fault its great!
Any solutions would be very much appreciated.

IMHO, the guy at your garage is talking utter drivel. The screaming is not caused by dirt/grit/moisture - it's the clutch slipping because the system is not adjusted correctly and the drive mechanism is over- or under-extending. Sure, grit/mud etc. do play their part but that gets into the brake shoes themselves, not the actuator which I think you'll find is pretty well sealed.
Following a number of reports to VOSA regarding faulty EPBs, Land Rover have concluded that in the majority of cases, EPB problems are being caused by garage techies not adjusting the thing correctly.
You don't say if you take your car to a LR garage but if you do, I'd suggest you take it to another one and get them to do a proper job on it or better still, get TFC to do it for you.

Hi, can't vote as mine hasn't screamed yet, thankfully.
I have an amber 'park brake fault' warning on mine. It has happened before around 6m ago and the garage scared me by telling me that the park brake could seize on at any time!! scared of driving it now
Is this correct..? If so what would happen....would I go into a spin..?

I don't think its likely to seize, but if your rear wheels get covered in excess brake dust, or the wheels get very hot on a normal drive, or you experience a sudden 'juddering' sensation when travelling fast then a strip and adjust might be worthwhile.
However, you might just need to recalibrate the xy sensor on the gearbox. The yellow epb warning will display, along with sluggish gear indication in the bottom of the speedometer.
You can try and recalibrate it yourself. Find a long quiet straight road.
1. Enagage low range (makes it easier)
2. Engage reverse and drive in reverse until the R indicates in the bottom of the speedo. Make sure you completely release the clutch and take your foot off the pedal whilst doing this.
3. Enagage 1st and drive until the 1 indicates in the bottom of the speedo, again ensuring you release and take your foot off the clutch pedal.
4. Change to 2nd and repeat,
5. 3rd and repeat, etc. etc.
Do this all the way through to 6th gear.
Stop, neutral, feet off pedals, switch off.
On restart it should be back to normal Club 18 - 30 (I wish !!)

Never heard of a EPB 'coming on' randomly when it feels like it.
Most complain that it does not work when they want it to
The EPB has a built in system for allowing it to be ised as a emergency brake, but you need to pull up the lever for at least 3 seconds for this to be enabled - it will then put the vehicle into 'emergency brake mode'
And the vehicle will STOP - as quckly as it can allowing for road conditions etc by utilising the ABS system on ALL four wheels - so it would be almost impossible to 'spin'
I DO NOT suggest you try this, and most who have have ensured they are below 20MPH, and on a quiet road with NO other vehicles behind Never get mad - get even !!

Thank you so much Gareth and disco_steve for your comments...that's very reassuring
Hmm....I'm thinking it's definitely time that I parted company with my current 4x4 garage and am going to give TFC a try as he's been recommended lots on here and is not too far from me
I am going to try recalibrating the xy sensor as you suggest..how cool would that be if it works on mine too
Will let you know how I get on...fingers crossed

You can take my "no problem vote" off. After the snow and Tong it now screams like a banshee... Stopped using it which really defeats the object of having one.... Regards, Trev.

Bah, mines started to squeal when applied and dealer wants £220 to strip clean and adjust as it's not covered by warranty and it's between services. Not a hope it can wait until the service is due and TFC can sort it prperly!! 07 XS Cairns Blue

Just taken Disco back to dealer for EPB to be fixed yet again. Went into dealers for 2 days last week to have it fixed, often creeps when applied, so as warranty expiration imminent, decided to try and get it fixed once and for all (some hope). Last week left dealer and only got to first traffic lights where I applied the EPB and it jammed on. Had to get LR Assist to sort it (could have done it myself but needed a sledgehammer to assist with getting it fixed for free).
Now in dealer again (where I am sitting doing some work while they try to sort it out. Service receptionist just came to me and said "It's in the workshop and the lad says it not a problem with the Actuator, it's a comms problem, there's no link to the parking brake module". So I said, "Have they noticed the fuse has been removed and is sitting in the driver's cup holder?!?"
Good start eh?
Doesn't bode well does it. Anyone know a dealer who could actually sort this out for me?
PS Ex booby, so trained to apply handbrake every time I stop. So unlike a lot of people (maybe some of whom dazzle me with their foot brake depressed when stopped) I use it religiously. 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey, Ebony Leather, Tin Tenter

In a manual car can you not either take out the fuse or a wire to the epb and disable it totallyanx just leave it in first or reverse? Assuming you park on relatively flat sufaces???
