Aging D3, Changing Oil Filter - take care, exploding sleeves
Whilst changing the oil filter, I realised that most of the sleeves around the wires across the top of the engine have now disintegrated. What makes it worse is that they are brittle and have a tendency to explode when touched - not good when the oil filter canister is removed or being removed for a filter change.
My advice on an aging D3 is to remove the brittle sleeves near the canister BEFORE removing it. Then replace with new sleeve. I found that by using a sharp knife I could cut the length of the sleeve - go around it as you cut rather than in a straight line and it will help it stay in position. Plus tape at each end. Here is the new sleeves on my glow plug harness. It has three wires and the only sleeve I have was too narrow - hence two sleeves.

done the same with mine when doing the fuel injectors, got pipe of flea bay and a few rolls of loom material tape

Oh yeah. The oil filter is a fxkjing cracking design on these.
Upside down so collects all the plastic as you say. All the glow plug swarf.
And a nipple and spring design so, well.

Changed mine a few days ago and must admit took me around 20 x mins to get it refitted , didn’t realise at first with that spring in the housing , fitted the filter first then housing after
Hardest bit was the wires and hoses surrounding the housing and was really worried of breaking something

Done mine few weeks ago now too, but it wasn’t so bad as all wires have the new protective sleeving on but like you say took a while to swop it all over. I put the filter in position first then cleaned all housing and put that on with a new sealMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

Hi
The thing that was in the way the most was a sensor connector at the front , looked like it connected to a tube, didn’t want to push it out of the way too much and I had wondered if it could have been disconnected out of the way
Thats the spill back pipe loop best not to mess to much with that as they are fragile to say the least.

Many thks , tube curved round so as I tried to put the housing back I noticed it got caught under the housing , so used a screwdriver to carefully ease it out of the way whilst pushing the housing down
At least I know what they are now , may I ask have u had to replace them
I looked up that connector and see it’s the fuel temp sensor, that was the sod that also got in the way

There is a groove in the air intake Y for the sensor to rest in.

My pipe and wiring was put back in wrong place by the dealer after they replace some glow plugs 8 years ago. Many thks, did seem strange how the pipes were in the way , looking at the connector it’s not in the grooved slot , but worried about moving it
As I’ve replaced the filter will also leave it alone
I slotted a screwdriver between them as I slid the housing down which helped alot and stopped them catching underneath the filter
Engine use-to have a rattle when I first started the engine up for a few seconds, since replacing the oil that’s now gone , old oil was rank , garage done it last time so don’t know if it was quality oil
I used mannol fully synthetic 5/30 oil and genuine filter this time and maybe it’s just me but seems to rev a lot easier , quieter and smoother
Only took 6 x litres , but got another new 1 x litre bottle spare for top ups
