Sump plate replacement will only replace the oil which will drain out of the gearbox under gravity. A flush will replace practically all of the oil as the engine is running and the new oil is pumped around the galleries, pushing almost all of the old oil out.

I had a customer of mine had his filter changed and oil topped up with new (about 4litres) the day before I came to flush his gearbox.

The oil that came out was terrible, you hardly think there had been any new oil gone in.

Flushed it and it drove so much smoother.

The filter is really quite coarse so I would be surprised if it stopped much at all tbh.

So if you’re going to change the filter, fill with new, drop again fill with new, drop again and you’ll be up to about 73% oil change with double change, 86% with a triple change.

Or just get a flush...

If they specialise in gearboxes maybe they do something different?

But as the flush is cheaper and more guaranteed to replace more than a sump drop, may as well do that.

You probably want to search past threads on the subject but it’ll amount to the following:

1. flush with machine, no replacement of pan and filter (= in practice total volume of ATF is replaced)
2. pan and filter replacement, put in only as much new ATF as needed (= roughly half of ATF volume is replaced)
3. flushing at home (filo flush, search here)
4. 2 but do it several times (= dilutes more)
5. 2 followed by 1

For option 2 there are two possibilities: a. replace with like (integrated filter, composite pan), b. Replace with metal pan (and separate filter). Option b is significantly faster and easier, option a is what a JLR dealer would do.

I researched this for quite some time last year and chose option 1. Because the pan wasn’t leaking from gaskets, the mechatronic sleeve wasn’t leaking, the filter inside the pan is quite coarse - it doesn’t necessarily need changing (so not like an oil filter). I changed the ATF as a precaution and because I knew it hadn’t been done before.

If there is any leakage it probably makes sense to replace the pan. If you’re dropping the pan, change the mechatronic sleeve (TZV500010) at the same time as it isn’t accessible otherwise.

Hope this helps.

+1 for the mechatronics sleeve. It only costs a few quid.
