Bit scary as a recent buyer of a MY11 D4. Will make sure I have a warranty (minimum engine & gearbox) for as long as poss.

not really accurate, most D4s in ZA with a broken crank were regularly maintained at the dealerships.
And the incidence is far more than you realise, see http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showth...re-Reports--

Of course there is, stop buying Land Rovers
You can polish a turd but it will still smell of poop.

Not sure if relevant but I think service intervals on modern cars are to long

Yep, but it all counts to the cost of ownership figure or something. In other markets things like oil changes are more frequent, even if the driving conditions are similar.
I change my engine oil once a year and it is neither a challenging or time consuming thing to do. My dealer does the other oil change about 6 months later. I average around 12k a year so everything stays nice and fresh. My gearbox gets a simple drain and fill every year since its 3rd birthday too.
Cars are expensive but oil and paper are not.

I change the oil every 10K which I think should be ok with modern oils. I also feel that 5W30 is a bit thin for a diesel engine. I realise that there are very fine tolerances in a modern engine but I suspect that it is more about getting good economy figures for the manufacturer rather than what's best for the engine. This is just my gut feeling, it's not based on any facts or evidence!.Simon.

That would mean my wife's car would not have been serviced since purchased in November 2011
Its not just about mechanical longevity, its also about checking safety aspects.

It would if the service was every 10K, but the service is annual, regardless of mileage. But does not necessarily include an engine oil change.Simon.

I change my engine oil & filter every 6 months and the air filter every year + normal services.
I changed the oil pump at 6 years & c. 70k miles, and change the gearbox & transmission oils every other year.
