| Webasto Heater operated by phone |
|
Ok before i start , none of this would of been possible without all the hard work being done already by stapldm (original post here http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic15454.html)
Ok i used ...
GSM Remote unit ( so can dial up and switch it on )
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Chose this type as it dosent cost any thing to use ..it rings twice then disconnects .Only numbers i have pre stored can use the remote gsm.You can also get one that sends texts ..but this is the type i wanted.
Webasto oval timer (1533)
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Wires soldered to the back to simulate the pressing of the instant (flame ) button.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Box to put it all in from Maplins (LH22 £3.60)
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Pack of pins from Maplins ( A39GF £1.99) to connect to the webasto timer ( as i didnt get the 4 pin plug that it takes on the back)...you actually get 8 pins in the pack.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
If you cant get those , the 4 pin lead that fits on all cd/dvd roms can also be used.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Cut down the middle with a stanley knife and you then have 2 x 2 pin plugs.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Fitted the Gsm unit into the box.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Connected up the wiring.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Connected some wires around the back of the bulkhead.Used some 2 pin connectors to join it up to the box of tricks
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Other end went to battery positive .Used a connector and inline fuse aswell (for saftey )
 | | Click image to enlarge |
And connection into pin 2 on the webasto heater.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Box all complete with gsm and timer inside .Ariel , 2 pin conector and earth ring comming out of rubber gromets.
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Diddn't want to fit it near the webasto heater as there's not much room , plus it gets hot after its been on for 10 mins or so .
Eventually went for the drivers side box (were second battery goes)
 | | Click image to enlarge |
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Then realised that when my fuel can (that i leave in there ) was in place things got a bit tight with the ariel.
I then rotated it 90 degrees ...plenty of room again now .
 | | Click image to enlarge |
Thats the basic,s of it ..would of done a more in depth write up , but im off to Austria tommorow and have to pack tools etc.
All thats left is to push my nice icon ( my son created for me ) on my loverly iphone
Pressing this button dials up the gsm remote in the car.It rings twice then disconnects ( no charge ).Webasto fires up.
If i ring it again it shuts down the webasto heater ...handy if you in the pub and set the heater to go home ..then someone gets you another pint
One last thing to do , but run out of daylight , is connected some sort of L.E.D to show when its heating.
The webasto oval timer has 12v supply when its activated by the gsm.So i will use this .
Also a big thanks to AndrewW who got the oval timer for me
And ENT who got the gsm remotes..and without him pestering me to get this latest gadget, i proberly wouldn't have bothered
Thanks again Lee , i will be doing yours as soon as i return from Austria on Thursday. G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Looks great, where did you get the GSM unit. I fancy adding this to my set up. Wish I had bought the cheaper timer now rather than the proper kit

That has to get the award for best modification
Does it activate the blowers etc in the car or just heat the system? Only asking as the FFRR I am borrowing at the moment puts the FBH and blowers on by remote control so the car is warm as toast when you get in.

Gsm units were purchased from Ebay ..they were on for £129 each + postage ..got 2 for £250 all in .
Unfortunalty , no blowers .Have spoke to webasto and its a no no ..to much involved.
However phone it 15 mins before i go out and the temp guage is reading half way in the car , so instant warm air when i put the heaters on . G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

That Wiggs is fantastic Proper job, nicely done!
Must put a GSM remote on my xmas list...does the SMS text version have multiple outputs?
I'm hoping to look into the blower problem during a couple of days off I've got planned (work may decide otherwise ) during xmas. If I get lucky and my crazy scheme works without fusing all the vehicle electrics , I'll be posting more updates in the new year. Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

Jeeze, that was quick, Adrian and GOOD
'Twas a pleasure to help...
I will pick your brains on this one, too, sometime. Do we NEED a GSM receive unit at £129? Can't we use a superceded phone? (I have a drawerful...)

Presumably for short range use the GSM unit could be replaced with a simple RF key fob operated relay to close the contacts on the timers instant heat button?
A question sort of related.... Has the Webasto heater got it's own electric pump to pump the hot water around the system or does it rely on convection? If yes to a pump, does that also come on with the heater?
Brilliant mod by the way !!!
Cheers, Richard.

Cool, If you need any tips , wiring etc ..just shout.
But its basically quite simple.
And when winters over you could use the gsm unit for a host of other things ...
Connect it to the EPB ..so if some fooker nicks your car ...phone it up and on comes the park brake
Connect to your fuel pump so it shuts the fuel off ....mmm possibilitys are endless
Thank god for technology ... G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Used to have a flip switch on the fuel pump in my old car. The carburettors had enough fuel to start the car, but the engine would cut out approx 30 seconds later when no further fuel was delivered to the engine. Thought this would confuse anyone who tried to steal the car, and thankfully never tested. Often forgot myself instead. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana
