Well since there is a couple of threads on here about the gear selectors on Auto box's I thought I would have my little two pence worth
Many moons ago I used to drive a Dennis RS fire appliance which was Automatic ;late 80's/90's andthis had a totally different selector layout to all current style auto's which I find very strange as the Dennis model was really logical in its layout
P was in the middle followed by pulling back one notch got you into neutral
Pulling the lever all the way to the back selected Reverse, logical eh back for reverse
From P pushing the lever I notch put it in first another forward notch into second the all the way forward put it into drive (there might have been 1,2,3 then drive )
so push forward and we go forward all the way back for reverse why isn't this the norm with cars? , Even now when I get in my D4 I still find myself selecting drive when I wanted reverse, I'm sure I'm not the only one to think that current auto box's are layed out wrong

I think it is inherited from old auto boxes from the 60's PRNDL Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive and Low and was probably defined by the internals of the mechanical boxes or could be from US when the lever was on the column
