Disco 3/LR3 V8 - burning smell front right - any ideas?
Here's the scenario; been the same every morning for the last 4 days and I can't figure it out. It's reasonably cold here, a bit +/- of freezing. Start the car, drive for a bit (to the ski slope car park; 12 miles); park up and I get a fairly strong burning smell from the front of the car. It's strongest in the front right wheel well, but it's def NOT the brake or caliper. It smells a bit like rubber/burnt clutch-type smell. It's not strong in the engine bay. The smell isn't present later in the day. I wondered if was ABS or something (lots of ice here) but today I was extra careful driving it in and the ABS wasn't required.
Car has 80k; in fantastic condition. No known problems at all (other than the 4.4L V8 fuel consumption; known issue ).
Wondered if anyone had any ideas?
Thanks. PAGODA

Are you sure it's not just the fuel burning heater. Mine seems to blow smoke towards the drivers side from the exhaust and makes it look like it is coming from there.2006 TdV6 HSE.

Just an idea:
Check your headlights - mine had one of the bulbs not inserted all the way and the bulb started melting the plastic. Was lucky to notice the error when upgrading sidelights to LED...
Next idea would be the main electric junction box containing the battery. Try to stick your nose in there and see if you have the smell in that area. Could be water ingress via Plastic left and right of the windscreen. The water typically goes into the main electric connector area and that could cause corrosion followed by heat due to higher resistance.
Good Luck with your V8

Two quick Qs for those in the know:
1. What are the tell tales of a failing alternator? Mine seems to be putting out about 14v, but the burning smell is still there and it ain't my lights!
2. The Denso is about $450 in the US. The Bosch is half that. What are people using if they replace the factory fitted alternator?
Grateful for any tips as I think I may just replace my alternator anyway as I don't believe it's ever been done.
