diagnostic help needed

Hello All,

I need your help!!

I took my RRS 2.7TDV6 to the garage today because I thought that the auto transmission was starting to fail. The garage took it for a run, and when out the engine lost all power, and went in to failsafe mode.

They turned the engine off, and back on, and it has worked fine.

I have not yet read the error codes (the garage is actually a gearbox specialist, so they don't have the diagnostic tools), but they are probably going to bring it round tomorrow and I will plug it in to the IID tool, and see what the errors are, but here are the symptoms...

not always, but when at approx. 90KPH (5th or 6th gear, engine around 1500rpm) I get a vibration like I am driving over a corrugated road. It is VERY slight, but I can definitely feel it.
All gear changes are fine. Fuel consumption is fine. Gearbox oil changed 1 month ago (filter and oil not flush).

Mechanic is not convinced that it is a problem with the transmission, and thinks that it could be an engine problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I will post the error codes as soon as I can get them, but at the moment I don't know if it has stored any.

Any guesses?

Did your one go in to engine failsafe mode when the T/C was failing?

The feeling like driving on a corrugated road is a symptom of a lock up clutch wear issue.

However, I wouldn't trust a gearbox specialist that doesn't have the ability to read fault codes from a transmission. They've been emission related components for about 20 years now and have to support OBD2 diagnostics if not EOBD.

He is retired, and sold his garage. He still has the equipment for the gearbox repairs, but has given all the diagnostic equipment to the person that bought his garage.

Could the T/C clutch cause the engine to go in to safe mode? It wasn't the transmission failsafe mode, but the engine failsafe mode.

It really needs to have the fault codes read as the engine and transmission are so interlinked for every action something is going to have been logged.

I will try to get my IID plugged in to it tomorrow, but the mechanic has the car at the moment.

I was just wondering if a transmission problem could cause the engine to loose power.

I will update when I have the error codes.

OK... the mechanic came round, and I plugged in the IID.

The error was the MAF.

The error has cleared, and it is running perfectly again.

The chap is obviously honest... he advised me not to have the gearbox refurbished because he said that there is nothing wrong with the gear-changes etc.

For the vibration, we are going to replace the torque converter (as many people say this is the problem). The rest of the box seems to be fine, and all gear-changes are perfectly smooth.

It should be finished later this week, and we will then see.

So... my next question... where should I get the new MAF? Original LR? OEM? what is the common consensus on here? For the D2 TD5, the MAF had to be Original LR as the others caused many problems.
