Iid tool - first timer, do's and dont's

Evening all,

Took delivery of my Bluetooth Iid tool today. Going to have a play tomorrow.

Any essential do's and dont's for a first timer? It's my only transport so don't want to be mucking anything up. I've got a 56 plate SE, so looking at the dash clock 4x4 screen etc.

Should I plug in to my Mac and check for updates first or plug straight in to car?

Thanks in advance

Leigh

Updates should be first thing to do after registering it. Depending what your going to be using it for a 12v supply could be advisable. First thing when plugging in is to read your faults, email to yourself then clear them. Doesn't take long to get the hang of it Thumbs Up

You need to plug it in yor car to get the code to register it then enter the code through the cc buttons, if I remember rightly, 'twas a long time ago when I did mine

Register and update, then download the manual pdf file & check what to do for each update/reflash you want to do. It's all in there and very useful. Thumbs Up

The manual suggests either keeping the engine running or using a very expensive power supply. Nanocom suggests a very expensive battery charger. Prob a stupid question but if I am not planning on tinkering with the engine (and I assume that most folk do not) then do I just stick with "engine running"? Or did I miss something?

Thanks

From the manual.....

Ensure that the vehicle is in Park (or in Neutral with the handbrake applied for manual transaxle) and in a safe environment.
If the vehicle is outside, start the engine.
If in a garage, Turn the key to the ON position.
If you plan to use the device for more than 10 minutes with the engine not running, connect
a power supply (Midtronic’s PSC-550 or equivalent) to the vehicle’s battery.
Note: Battery chargers are not suitable due to poor line regulation.

Seemed a reasonable question....... Do most users actually need the power supply?

I follow the advice in the manual. It is born of experience.

So off normal battery for short periods or engine running for longer. If engine needs to be off then I add a regulated 10 amp power supply for stuff over 10 mins. If working for over 30 min I connect jump leads to another vehicle as I do not have (or need) a 25 amp+ regulated power supply.

Battery state of charge and cold weather will increase my caution.

Thumbs Up

What you don't do is play with it for 15 minutes with the engine off(time goes very quickly when you are playing) and then do an upload, always make sure your battery is fully charged before uploading, if you have a good battery you will not have any problems, for important uploads the tool will check the battery state before starting and if not sufficiently charged will not continue, if you can do an upload in stages it is better to do so. Don't do what I did and connect a battery charger while uploading, a power supply yes or jump leads from a spare battery or vehicle.
Any problems contact GAP their customer service is out of this world Thumbs Up

I'm a first timer too! Have had a good look round and plan to flash some ecu's today.
Just wondered, I went to update it and the version it's on is a higher number than the suggested version, should I still update it?
